In\r\n1935 Karl Horstmann Senior (born\r\n24 October 1907) had already begun rearing\r\nand breeding laying hens on the farm.\r\nIn 1949 the first hen house of any great\r\nsize (stocked with 450 hens) was brought\r\ninto operation. That was the real start of\r\nbreeding and multiplication, which has\r\nnow been constantly developed as the\r\nmain sector of operations.<\/blockquote><br>\r\n\r\nAt some time around 1950 the business\r\nbegan breeding for the Breed Registry\r\nin cooperation with well-known hatching\r\neggs suppliers (breeding stock). New\r\nHampshire hens were bred for the Breed\r\nRegistry. At the same time the farm bred\r\nPartridge-Coloured Italians and White Leghorns.\r\nFrom 1957 to 1959 the sons of the\r\nfamily, Karl and Dieter Horstmann, contributed\r\nto the German breeding project\r\nwith New Hampshire and Leghorn breeds,\r\nthe result of which was intended to be the\r\nGerman Master Hybrids.\r\n<br><br>\r\n\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lohmann-breeders.com\/media\/2020\/07\/DEVELOPMENT-OF-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"80%\" class=\"imgcenter\" \/>\r\n<br><br>\r\n\r\n\r\n<strong>Mr Heinz Lohmann introduced\r\nhimself in 1958<\/strong><br><br>\r\n\r\nIn early 1958 the Hanover Chamber of Agriculture\r\ncontacted Karl Horstmann junior (born 12\r\nJuly 1936). There Mr Heinz Lohmann introduced\r\nhimself in person in order to set up contact\r\nwith what was then the largest hatchery\r\nin Lower Saxony. From their very first meeting\r\nHeinz Lohmann and Karl Horstmann saw eye\r\nto eye. It was quickly agreed that on a trial basis\r\nKarl Horstmann should obtain 200 hens as\r\nthe end product of the HNL breed of laying\r\nhen (renamed LSL in 1978) directly from the\r\nUSA. <br><br>\r\n\r\nThe animals showed their mettle in Germany,\r\nwith the result that the first HNL parent\r\nbirds were purchased from the Horstmann\r\nbreeding firm in 1959 by Heinz Lohmann. An\r\nappropriate breeding contract was concluded\r\nin the very same year. A group of hatcheries\r\nhad formed themselves into a hybrid breed\r\nbreeding association, with Mr Eckart Hosch as\r\nManaging Director. The object of the company\r\nwas the placement of the breeding stock\r\nbreeders&#8217; excess (free) hatching eggs.<br><br>\r\n\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lohmann-breeders.com\/media\/2020\/07\/DEVELOPMENT-OF-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"80%\" class=\"imgcenter\" \/>\r\n<br><br>\r\n\r\n\r\n<strong>The HNL hens (today&#8217;s LSL) proved\r\ntheir worth:<\/strong><br><br>\r\n\r\nIn the years that followed the HNL laying\r\nhens secured themselves considerable\r\nshares of the market. The general trend\r\ntowards larger production units, which\r\nwas achieved through the technical development\r\nof the barn equipment (caged\r\nsystem housing) and the high standard of\r\nbreeding of the pullets and laying hens\r\npromoted the fast growth of the Geflu\u0308gelzucht\r\nHorstmann poultry farm.<br><br>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<blockquote>In 1963 Dieter Horstmann (brother\r\nof Karl Horstmann junior) expanded the\r\npullet breeding segment with their own\r\nbarns to meet the demands of the steadily\r\ngrowing market.<\/blockquote>\r\n\r\n<br><br>\r\n\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lohmann-breeders.com\/media\/2020\/07\/DEVELOPMENT-OF-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"80%\" class=\"imgcenter\" \/>\r\n<br><br>\r\n\r\n\r\n<strong>State award<\/strong><br><br>\r\n\r\nIn 1967 in recognition of their success the\r\nHorstmann company was presented with the\r\nState Prize for Outstanding Services to Animal\r\nBreeding by the then Minister of Agriculture\r\nfor Lower Saxony, Wilfried Hasselmann.\r\nSaved by the LTZ Veterinary Laboratory\r\nAt the start of 1970 Geflu\u0308gelzucht Horstmann\r\nwas threatened with total shutdown.\r\nA disease, which is still with us today, Marek&#8217;s disease, was causing disastrous\r\nloss of animals. Frantically, the\r\nfirm sought solutions from every possible\r\ndirection. <br><br>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<blockquote>Despair spread through\r\nthe Horstmann family. However, they\r\nthen they received a call from LOHMANN\r\nTIERZUCHT. There were reports that an\r\ninnovative vaccine had been developed\r\nto control this devastating disease. As a\r\nlast hope the vaccine was used by the\r\nLTZ Veterinary Laboratory in Horstmann&#8217;s\r\n&#8216;moor section&#8217; hatchery.<\/blockquote>\r\n\r\n <br>\r\n\r\nThe herpes virus,\r\nwhich had been isolated from turkeys,\r\nproved to have ground-breaking success\r\nas a vaccine and thus brought the desired\r\nsalvation. At this point we would like\r\nonce more to send our warm thanks to\r\nDr. Egon Vielitz, the Head of the Veterinary\r\nLaboratory at that time.<br><br>\r\n\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lohmann-breeders.com\/media\/2020\/07\/DEVELOPMENT-OF-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"80%\" class=\"imgcenter\" \/>\r\n<br><br>\r\n\r\n\r\n<strong>A new LTZ product, the LB hens:<\/strong><br><br>\r\n\r\nFrom about 1978 the white breeds began\r\nto lose market shares, since brown-shelled\r\neggs were becoming increasingly popular,\r\nespecially in North Germany.<br><br>\r\n\r\nLOHMANN TIERZUCHT responded to\r\nthis trend. On the occasion of the LOHMANN\r\nBreeders&#8217; Convention in November\r\n1979 the new &#8220;LOHMANN BROWN&#8221; hen\r\nwas presented. <br>Karl Horstmann junior took\r\nover this breed and together with the LSL\r\nbegan breeding the brown laying hybrids\r\n(LB). The LB hens also proved to be &#8216;highflyers&#8217;\r\nboth for their laying performance\r\nand for their low feed requirements. <br>With\r\nthis product LOHMANN TIERZUCHT once\r\nmore gained market shares, from which\r\nthe LOHMANN breeders, including Geflu\u0308gelzucht\r\nHorstmann reaped the benefits.<br><br>\r\n\r\n<strong>Breeding of LT hens for the alternative\r\nmarket:<\/strong><br><br>\r\n\r\nIn 1998 LOHMANN began breeding the LT\r\nparent birds in order to meet the increasing\r\ndemand from the alternative sector.\r\nGeflu\u0308gelzucht Horstmann reacted immediately\r\nand installed the first LOHMANN\r\ntest flock on 6 March 1999. The first LT end\r\nproducts hatched on 30 July 1999.<br><br>\r\n\r\nThe LT hens quickly became wellknown\r\nfor their nest mobility and they were\r\nthe hens &#8220;with the large eggs&#8221;. Current performance\r\ntests show that, compared with\r\nLB hens, the LT end product hen produces\r\nan egg weighing on average 2 grams more.<br>\r\nIn addition, as regards total egg mass the LT\r\nhen with 22.2 kg lies only minimally below\r\nthe LB hen (22.3 kg.). Over the course of the\r\nyears this outstanding 20 years of breeding\r\noutput has gained a substantial market\r\nshare for Geflu\u0308gelzucht Horstmann, especially\r\nin the self-marketing market segment\r\nbecause of the many large eggs (Class XL).<br><br>\r\n\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lohmann-breeders.com\/media\/2020\/07\/DEVELOPMENT-OF-5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"50%\" class=\"imgcenter\" \/>\r\n<br><br>\r\n\r\n\r\n<strong>Status quo for Geflu\u0308gelzucht Horstmann<\/strong><br><br>\r\n\r\nIn the last few years Geflu\u0308gelzucht Horstmann\r\nhas reared an average of approx.\r\n28,000 parent birds per year. The perchery\r\nsystem has proved the preferred form of\r\nrearing. Pro rata approx. 15% LSL parent\r\nbirds, approx. 40% LT parent birds and 45%\r\nLB parent birds are reared at the site at\r\n31592 Stolzenau, Kohlenweihe 11.<br><br>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<blockquote>Some 10% of the hatching eggs produced\r\nare sold to external customers and\r\n90% are required for the firm&#8217;s own hatchery.\r\nThe hatchery, which was newly built\r\nin 1977, has a potential capacity of approx.\r\n3.5 million pullet chicks per year with maximum weekly production of 80,000 dayold\r\nchicks. Of the some 2.5 million chicks\r\nactually produced during the year approx.\r\n55% are sold directly as day-old chicks and\r\nthe other 45% are reared as pullets on the\r\nfirm&#8217;s six breeding farms (perchery system).<\/blockquote>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nSince 1950 Geflu\u0308gelzucht Horstmann\r\nhas been recognised as a training company\r\nfor animal farmers specialising in poultry.\r\nIn March 2003 Frank, the son of Karl Horstmann\r\nand Knut, the son of Dieter Horstmann\r\ntook over the management of Geflu\u0308gelzucht\r\nHorstmann.<br><br>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<blockquote>It is anticipated that in the fourth generation\r\nthe brothers Nico, Kevin and Tom\r\nHorstmann will determine the further\r\ndevelopment of the Geflu\u0308gelzucht Horstmann\r\npoultry business and will continue\r\nto rely on the breeding services of LOHMANN\r\nTIERZUCHT GmbH.<\/blockquote>\r\n\r\n<br><br>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lohmann-breeders.com\/media\/2020\/07\/DEVELOPMENT-OF-6.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"80%\" class=\"imgcenter\" \/>\r\n<br><br>\r\n\r\n\r\n<strong>Rewards of experience:<\/strong><br><br>\r\n\r\nOne thing can be said about the previous\r\ngenerations and that is that during the\r\nlast 60 years the Horstmann family have\r\npurchased the parent birds exclusively,\r\nbecause this firm has always supplied high\r\nquality birds. <br><br>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<blockquote>During the last 60 years this\r\nquality has ensured success on the market\r\nvis-\u00e0-vis all the firm&#8217;s competitors.
