Since its foundation by former chairman\r\nHideo Tokoro in 1963, Ghen\r\nCorporation of Gifu in Japan has\r\nevolved into the undisputed leader in the\r\nJapanese layer chick industry. At present\r\nthis full subsidary of the EW-Group supplies\r\nnearly 90 % of all layer breeders in\r\nJapan. About 22 independent hatcheries\r\npurchase breeders from Ghen\u2019s GPS operation.\r\nJapanese consumers prefer white\r\nshelled eggs (about 65 %), brown (28%)\r\nand tinted (7%) eggs are mainly sold as socalled\r\nbranded eggs.<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\n\r\nA recently founded company called\r\nNihon-Layer, which also belongs to the\r\nEW-Group, is a key producer of commercial\r\nlayer chicks with an annual capacity\r\nof almost 25 million chicks. Since the early\r\nnineties the share of LSL commercials\r\n(called Julia in Japan) has grown to more\r\nthan 85 % of the domestic white egg layers.\r\nLOHMANN TIERZUCHT supplies both\r\nLSL CLASSIC and LITE Grandparents to\r\nJapan to safeguard continuous production\r\nof breeding stock. \r\n\r\n\r\nHow did we achieve such an impressive\r\ngrowth?<\/strong>\r\nExcellent genetics.<\/strong><\/em>

\r\n\r\nIn the early years we had only one white\r\nvariety; LSL. Due to different preferences\r\nfor egg sizes in various regions, LOHMANN\r\ngenetics started to develop varieties\r\nwith different egg weight patterns.

\r\n\r\nAfter the introduction of the LSL LITE\r\nvariety to complement the LSL CLASSIC,\r\nmore birds were placed in different regions.\r\nThe Japanese table egg market is\r\ncharacterised by urban areas where people\r\nprefer medium sized eggs and more\r\nrural areas where large sized eggs are\r\npreferred. Besides diversification of egg\r\nsize, genetics also realised impressive\r\nprogress in productivity and egg quality\r\ntraits, which made the LSL the most popular\r\nwhite egger in Japan.

\r\n\r\nGhen Corporation of Gifu has grandparent\r\nstock of LOHMANN and Hyline. They\r\nsupply parent stock to nearly all layer hatcheries\r\nspread over Japan. Their GP facility\r\nis located in an isolated area in northern\r\nJapan, with state of the art facilities and\r\nstrict bio-security. Having GPS is a huge\r\nadvantage in Japan, as authorities can be\r\nvery precise concerning the import of parent\r\nstock from abroad. The Japanese egg\r\nmarket is highly quality oriented and\r\ntherefore breeding companies have to\r\nconcentrate not only on the productivity\r\nof the birds, but also both external (shell)\r\nand internal (albumen height, absence of\r\nblood and meat spots) quality are crucial\r\ntraits. The table egg market is predominantly\r\nwhite, but brown and tinted eggs\r\nare gaining in popularity with consumers.
