Competition enforces efforts on German market <\/h2>

\r\n\r\nSince the borders in Europe have fallen, it is tempting for producers in border areas to expand their activities to\r\nneighbouring countries. This development has also not spared the layer market. Sales representatives of competitors are\r\ncourting egg producers and try to conquer the German market.<\/strong><\/em>


\r\n\r\n\r\nThe franchise hatchery Gudendorf-Ankum\r\nlocated in Ankum in the northwest of Germany has communicated this observation.\r\nThus, the editor of Poultry News went onsite to get a clear picture of the situation.\r\nTogether with Thomas Uhlenkamp, sales\r\nrepresentative of the Gudendorf-Ankum\r\npoultry breeding farm, they visited egg\r\nproducers in the German-Dutch border\r\narea.

\r\n\r\n\r\nFirst stop was the farm of Edzard Schmidt\r\nwho has a flock of 18,000 LOHMANN\r\nBROWN for organic egg production near\r\nAurich. Organic egg production means a\r\nmaximum stocking density of 3,000 hens\r\nper group and additionally, four square\r\nmeters of green run per hen. Also on the\r\ngreen run, the birds of each group must\r\nnot mix and have to stay clearly separated.

\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
The characteristic of this management\r\nsystem is that already the rearing has to\r\ncarried out completely biological. Anything synthetic is not allowed. During the\r\nlaying period the hens have light from 5\r\na.m. to 7 p.m., thus a total of 14 hours. The\r\nLOHMANN BROWN-CLASSIC laying hen\r\nis perfectly suited for this management\r\nsystem.<\/blockquote>


\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nGreat commitment of sales\r\nrepresentative<\/strong>

\r\n\r\n\r\nThe young farmer Edzard Schmidt is caring intensively for his layers. In 2008 he has\r\nhoused his first flock (12,000 hens) and in\r\nthe meantime, increased to 18,000 hens.\r\nAsked why he has housed a LOHMANN\r\nBROWN-CLASSIC flock for the third time,\r\nhe replied: \u201cThe support of the sales representative from Gudendorf-Ankum plays\r\na key role in my success.\u201d Due to its excellent persistency, the flock could be housed\r\nlonger than the 75th week of life. And\r\nthe egg weight is higher than that of the\r\nstandard LOHMANN BROWN.

\r\n\r\nLOHMANN TIERZUCHT hens are wellknown for laying eggs with a uniform colour and a solid egg shell \u2013 characteristics\r\nwhich are of great importance to many\r\negg producers. Schmidt is selling the eggs\r\nto a marketer.

\r\n\r\n\r\nShowing great commitment, the sales\r\nrepresentative of the franchise hatchery\r\nhas supported the development of the\r\norganic farm from the beginning and prepared, with his profound calculations of\r\nprofitability, the meeting with the bank. If\r\nthe product is all right and the customer\r\nconvinced, soon a friendly partnership is\r\nestablished. Thus, it is much more difficult\r\nfor competitors to enter the market, even if\r\na well-trained staff is inviting for coffee and\r\ncake. It is much easier to court an already\r\noperating producer without doing all the\r\ngrassroots work.

\r\n\r\n\r\nImmense satisfaction with\r\nfranchise distributor<\/strong>

\r\n\r\nAnother operation houses 40,000\r\nLOHMANN BROWN-CLASSIC in a free-range\r\nsystem. Since 27 years, he always buys hens\r\nonly from LOHMANN TIERZUCHT. This immediately suggested the question \u201eWhy?\u201d The\r\nreliability of the layers with regard to persistency, shell colour, laying performance and\r\nbreaking strength of the shell are well-known\r\nfactors. But what else explains this long-term\r\nconfidence? The producer\u2019s answer was: \u201dIf I\r\nneed something, Gudendorf-Ankum is providing it! They have the corresponding size\r\nto flexibly react to my needs.\u201c

\r\n\r\nThomas Uhlenkamp and the editor of Poultry\r\nNews made their last stop at the company of\r\nAntonius Schulte-S\u00fcdhoff in Engden. There, a\r\nflock of 40,000 LOHMANN LSL-CLASSIC hens\r\nis managed in a free-range system. Also this\r\nfarm has a contract with a marketer called\r\nHeidegold who is taking all his goods.

\r\n\r\n\r\nThe currently producing flock displays a very\r\nhigh laying peak and a good persistency.\r\nOnce again, this flock will show a result considerably above the standard performance.\r\nThe egg weight fulfils the market requirements of free-range eggs. Schulte-S\u00fcdhoff\r\nexplains that he still has space for additional\r\nhouses and based on his good experiences\r\nwith his first flock, is thinking about expansion. Thomas Uhlenkamp informed him\r\nabout the different possibilities and as a supplement recommended organic egg production or another free-range system.


\r\n\r\n\r\nAggressive approach of competition<\/strong>

\r\n\r\nApparently, competitors have a completely different marketing strategy. They\r\naggressively approach the market and\r\nrecommend barn systems on a large-scale.\r\nA type of complete package is offered,\r\nhowever, the egg numbers are often not\r\nachieved and the producers are clearly left\r\nstanding.

\r\nPeople and strategies are very different\r\nand thus, the one or other producer has\r\nalready been fooled by the competition\u2019s\r\npromises. Indeed, these producers have\r\nvery quickly faced the harsh reality. \r\n


\r\n\r\n\r\nPartner with many\r\nadvantages<\/strong>

\r\n\r\n\r\nBesides the known qualities of LOHMANN\r\nTIERZUCHT layers, some of the so-called\r\nsoft skills of the sales staff are playing a key\r\nrole. But also the size of the franchise distributor and his flexibility play a major part\r\nin the economic success of the producers,\r\ne.g. due to consulting regarding the management system and the choice of highquality feed or due to support during the\r\nplanning phase. This can only be achieved\r\nby people who have gained the producers\r\nconfidence, who are living near by and are\r\navailable quasi at any time.

\r\nDue to their tireless efforts, the sales representatives from Gudendorf-Ankum\r\nhave acquired the producers trust and are\r\nexemplary for many of their colleagues\r\nalso from other German franchise hatcheries who successfully sell LOHMANN\r\nTIERZUCHT layers.\r\n
