High-level speakers from Germany and abroad promised an interesting\r\nevent. This time, the following topics were on focus: shell stability and animal welfare.<\/strong><\/em> <br><br><br>\r\n\r\n\r\nIn his welcome speech, Dr. Hans-Friedrich\r\nFinck emphasized the continuous increase\r\nin sales of LOHMANN TIERZUCHT and revealed some development prospects of\r\ngenetics. He highlighted, for example, the\r\nselection regarding improved vitality of the\r\nbirds, the development of niche products\r\nand the selection regarding nest acceptance. Furthermore, he informed about the\r\nvisual changes in LOHMANN TIERZUCHT\u2019s\r\nexternal communication.\r\n<br><br><br>\r\n\r\n\r\n<strong>Focus on egg shell <\/strong><br><br>\r\nFirst speaker was Prof. Sally Solomon of\r\nthe University of Glasgow with the lecture\r\nentitled: \u201cThe egg shell: suited for its purpose?\u201d In her vivid presentation, the wellknown poultry researcher examined the\r\negg shell from the hatching egg as well as\r\nthe table egg perspective with a special\r\nfocus on shell structure. Finally, her conclusion was: \u201cFit for purpose\u201d. <br><br>\r\n\r\nDr. Wiebke Icken and Dr. Matthias Schmutz\r\nof LOHMANN TIERZUCHT commonly lectured on the selection regarding shell\r\nstability and thus, directly followed Prof.\r\nSolomon\u2019s subject. They elaborated on\r\ndifferent methods of measuring shell stability and the comparison of testing devices for breaking strength as well as the\r\nbreaking strength of eggs depending on\r\nthe hens\u2019 age. The specialists of LOHMANN\r\nTIERZUCHT stated that for measuring shell\r\nstability the so-called Crack Detector is\r\nthe best method in order to ensure a continuous genetic improvement of the shell\r\nstability.<br><br>\r\n\r\n\r\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lohmann-breeders.com\/media\/2020\/08\/j16.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"627\" class=\"imgcenter\" \/>\r\n\r\n\r\n<br><br>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nDr. Frederik Ranck of Ranck Veterinary\r\nPractice completed the first event day with\r\nhis lecture on \u201cEgg shell defects of commercial layers caused by Mycosplasma\r\nsynoviae\u201c. He explained that Mycosplasma\r\nsynoviae have a great influence on shell\r\nquality and laying performance. Moreover,\r\nMycosplasma synoviae also affect the egg\r\nquality with regard to shell colour, consistency of albumen, size of air space, yolk\r\ncolour as well as shell stability.\r\n\r\n<br><br><br>\r\n<strong>Focus on animal husbandry\r\nand welfare<\/strong><br><br>\r\n\r\nThe second event day concentrated on\r\nanimal husbandry and welfare. Arnold Elson of ADAS Gleadthorpe (UK) started with\r\na lecture on the past, present and future\r\nof laying hen farming. The future of laying\r\nhen husbandry should aim at the following:<br><br>\r\n\r\n\u2022\t further development of enriched\r\ncages <br>\r\n\u2022\t optimization of aviary and free\r\nrange systems<br>\r\n\u2022\t dissemination of animal-friendly\r\nsystems also outside Europe<br>\r\n\u2022\t secure protection system for laying hens, e.g. protecting against\r\nbirds of prey<br><br>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<blockquote>The lecture of Prof. Dr. Rudolf Preisinger\r\nwas entitled: \u201eRelevant Animal Welfare\r\nAspects in layer breeding\u201c. He talked\r\nabout daily challenges as well as animal welfare aspects, basic research regarding sexing, beak trimming, single\r\ncage management for exact efficiency\r\ntesting and animal identification \u2013 and\r\nput all this up for discussion. According\r\nto Preisinger, bad management could  affect animal welfare in any system,\r\nwhereas in alternative systems good\r\nmanagement is particularly required\r\nand expensive.<\/blockquote><br><br>\r\n\r\n\r\nThe event was completed with the\r\npresentation of Dr. Klaus Damme\r\n(from the expert centre for poultry in\r\nKitzingen). In his presentation about\r\nthe use of male layer hybrids for meat\r\nproduction, he explained the difficulty\r\nin feeding a male layer hybrid in such\r\na way that he becomes fat enough\r\nto be saleable as a broiler male. This\r\nmeasure for avoiding the forced death\r\nof day-old male chicks of layer hybrids\r\nwas not only problematic with regard\r\nto the considerably longer fattening\r\nperiod, but also with regard to the\r\nautomation of the slaughtering process. The setup for the special integration of small broilers including a new\r\nbuild slaughterhouse and a specialised\r\nmarketing would be required, Damme\r\nconcluded. <br><br>\r\n\r\nBoth Preisinger and Damme stated\r\nclearly that when it comes to evaluating alternatives to the forced death of\r\nmale layer hybrids, the focus must not\r\nbe put on economic and commercial\r\ninterests. A lively discussion with controversial opinions finalized the series\r\nof lectures. The opposing points of\r\nview were on the one hand the hunger\r\nin developing countries and on the\r\nother hand the forced death of male\r\nday-old chicks for whose fattening\r\nmuch more corn would have to be\r\ngrown.  <br><br>\r\n\r\nIn the evening of the first event day,\r\nthe participants could relax in the\r\npleasant Hudson Eventloft which\r\noffered an ideal ambience for mutual\r\nexchange and further discussions\r\namong the experts.  <br><br>\r\n\r\n<strong>The 50th Franchise Distributor Meeting will take place from 25th to 27th of\r\nSeptember 2012 in Berlin.<\/strong>\r\n\r\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lohmann-breeders.com\/media\/2020\/08\/j17.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"708\" class=\"imgcenter\" \/>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"49th LOHMANN TIERZUCHT Franchise Distributor Meeting Fr [&hellip;]","protected":false},"author":15,"featured_media":52009,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"ngg_post_thumbnail":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[2335],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-52007","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-poultry-news-zh-hans","issue-1-2012-zh-hans","yeararchive-2012-zh-hans"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<title>Focus on shell stability and animal welfare -
