{"id":52039,"date":"2020-08-31T17:08:44","date_gmt":"2020-08-31T15:08:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lohmann-breeders.com\/new-performance-standards-for-all-laying-hens\/"},"modified":"2020-08-31T17:08:44","modified_gmt":"2020-08-31T15:08:44","slug":"new-performance-standards-for-all-laying-hens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lohmann-breeders.com\/zh-hans\/new-performance-standards-for-all-laying-hens\/","title":{"rendered":"New performance standards for all laying hens"},"content":{"rendered":"<em><strong>After a period of four years the performance data has been updated.<\/strong><\/em> <br><br><br>\r\n\r\n\r\nThe target performance data of all main\r\nproducts of the <strong>LOHMANN<\/strong> breeding programme have been elevated considerably\r\nfor the last time in 2008. Then, for the first\r\ntime separate performance standards for\r\nalternative housing systems were introduced in order to adjust to the changed\r\ngeneral conditions due to barn, aviary and\r\nfree-range systems. Since 2008, the performance standards have not been changed.<br><br>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<blockquote>In the meantime, however, thanks to genetic progress as well as improved housing\r\nand management conditions increasingly\r\nbetter performances have been achieved\r\nin commercial farms. This applies both to\r\nhousing in conventional cage systems still\r\ncommon in non-EU countries and to enriched cages within the European Union\r\nand alternative systems. An adjustment\r\nto the target performances is not carried\r\nout every year.<\/blockquote>\r\n\r\n <br><br>\r\n\r\nThe genetically determined\r\nimprovement has been accumulated over\r\nthe past four years and after that, the new\r\nperformance target was defined, which\r\nwill now again last for some time.<br><br><br>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<strong>Improvement of the laying persistency<\/strong><br><br>\r\n\r\nEspecially after the 50th week of life the productivity of the hens has improved. This is\r\na logical consequence of the high selection priority set on the main breeding goal\r\nof laying persistency for saleable eggs. The\r\nbetter persistency at the end of the laying\r\ncycle as well as the continuously improved\r\negg quality (breaking strength) lead to an\r\nincreased productivity of the flocks providing saleable eggs. <br><br>\r\nThis allows for an extended housing period (without moulting) resulting in reduced costs per pullet\r\nand egg and thus, offers an economic advantage for the egg producer. Under the\r\ncommon practical conditions, housing periods become increasingly longer: Flocks\r\nproducing more than the 80 weeks stated\r\nin the former standards as the end of the\r\nproduction cycle are no longer a rarity. <br><br>\r\n\r\n\r\n<blockquote>For\r\nthis reason, the performance standards\r\nfor production in cage systems were extended from 80 to 90 weeks. In alternative\r\nsystems depopulation takes place averagely earlier than in cage systems, thus the\r\nperformance standards for this production\r\nsystem was only extended up to 85 weeks.<\/blockquote>\r\n\r\n<br><br>\r\n\r\nThe daily feed intake has not been\r\nchanged genetically. Today, the hens are\r\nable to produce a higher egg mass with\r\nthe same amount of feed, which is ascribed to the improved feed efficiency.\r\nThe balanced breeding strategy aiming\r\nat an improved feed conversion led to increased production efficiency at the same\r\nfeed requirement and a still sufficient feed\r\nintake capacity.<br><br>\r\n<br>\r\n\r\n<strong>New international standards for cage systems<\/strong><br>\r\n\r\n\r\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lohmann-breeders.com\/media\/2020\/08\/j65.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"210\" class=\"imgcenter\" \/><br><br>\r\n\r\n\r\nDue to the ban on conventional cage systems in the EU, especially in Western and\r\nNorthern Europe the traditional cages\r\nhave not been replaced with enriched\r\ncages but with barn, aviary and free-range\r\nsystems allowing the hens an increased\r\nphysical activity. The results with field flocks in such management systems are\r\noften lower compared to cage systems.\r\nNot only a lower egg number, but also a\r\nreduced egg weight can be observed in\r\ncomparison with cage systems. This fact\r\nhas been considered in the new data and\r\nan egg weight curve corresponding to the\r\nmanagement system has been defined as\r\na standard. <br><br><br>\r\n\r\n\r\n<strong>New standards for alternative management systems (barn, free-range\r\nand aviary systems)<\/strong><br><br>\r\n\r\n\r\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lohmann-breeders.com\/media\/2020\/08\/j66.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"209\" class=\"imgcenter\" \/>\r\n<br><br>\r\n\r\n\r\nThe standards of <strong>LOHMANN TIERZUCHT<\/strong>\r\nlaying hens both for cage and alternative\r\nsystems have been defined in such a way\r\nthat the production target is achieved at\r\naverage management and environmental conditions. They do not represent the\r\nmaximum attainable results respective\r\nto the genetic potential. We know that\r\nthe genetic potential of laying hens of\r\nall strains is considerably higher than our\r\nfield-related performance standards.<br><br>\r\n\r\nAt this point, we cannot predict when the\r\nnext adjustment of the targets will be carried out. <strong>LOHMANN TIERZUCHT<\/strong> invests a\r\nlot of work and capital in order to sustainably achieve further genetic progress also\r\nin the future. Not only with regard to the\r\neconomically most important characteristics as laying performance and feed conversion, but also in a further improved egg\r\nquality (shell stability, shell colour) and survival rate.<br><br>\r\n\r\nEven after many generations of intensive\r\nselection, the genetic parameters (heritability) still indicate that additional progress\r\nin performance is possible. For sure, the\r\nbiological limit of one egg per day is approaching and is already attained by many\r\nhens in the phase of the laying peak.
