A special layer for organic egg production <\/h2>\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\nSince 2009, LOHMANN TIERZUCHT offers a special layer for the organic market.<\/strong><\/em>

\r\n\r\n\r\nThis laying hen is characterized by a higher\r\nbody weight and a higher feed intake compared to the regular brown layers. The hen\r\nis referred to with the suffix \u201cPLUS\u201d indicating its higher body weight. Parent stock\r\nof this genotype is housed in the organic\r\nfarm of Mr. Schubert in Unterr\u00fcsselbach,\r\neast of Erlangen in Germany, since the end\r\nof 2009. Besides in Switzerland, this flock of\r\nLOHMANN parent stock is the only one of\r\nwhich already the parent stock is housed\r\nunder ecological conditions.


\r\n\r\n\r\nFranchise hatchery with parent stocks in bio husbandry\r\nfor organic producers<\/strong>

\r\nFor years, the share of organically produced\r\nand marketed eggs in Germany is slightly\r\nbut steadily increasing and, according to\r\nthe MEG market balance, was more than\r\n7 % in 2011. This continuing trend cannot\r\nbe ignored by a breeding company and\r\nthus, it has to think about if there are layers\r\nwhich better meet the requirements of organic egg production. For sure, layers of all\r\nLOHMANN TIERZUCHT strains available in\r\nGermany are also suitable for organic egg\r\nproduction and they have proven that by\r\nnumerous good performance results. But\r\nit is well known, that \u201cbetter is the enemy\r\nof good\u201d and for this reason, in the year\r\n2009 it has been considered how it would\r\nbe possible to achieve a targeted improvement for the exacting demands of organic\r\negg production.


\r\n\r\n\r\nHigher body weight and\r\nhigher feed intake required<\/strong>

\r\n\r\nFirst talks in the years 2008 and 2009 made\r\nit clear that the DEMETER association in\r\nGermany aims at offering its members (and\r\nmembers of other organic farming associations) chicks and pullets for egg production of which the parent stock is already\r\nhoused according to the requirements of\r\nthe association. As for this purpose a new\r\nparent stock husbandry should be built up,\r\nit was possible to additionally think about\r\na genetic adaptation. The requirements of\r\norganic egg production placed upon the\r\nlayers mainly concern limitations of the\r\nraw components: no soy meal, no synthetic amino acids. This often leads to a critical\r\nfeed structure and a lower nutrient density\r\nthan with conventional feeding. For ensuring that the laying hens take in sufficient\r\nnutrients in order to produce the desired\r\nperformance, layers with higher feed intake have a clear advantage.


\r\nLines with higher body\r\nweight existed<\/strong>

\r\nDue to other former considerations, at that\r\ntime already lines existed in the gene pool\r\nof LOHMANN TIERZUCHT, which had a\r\nhigher body weight and, always correlated\r\nto that, also showed a higher feed intake.\r\nThese lines are, however, no exotics, but\r\nas so-called subpopulations come from\r\nthe original breeding lines of LOHMANN\r\nBROWN. Thus, over several generations\r\nparticularly those families were chosen,\r\nwhich fulfilled the requirements of a high\r\nbody weight best. The new lines were\r\nthen built up from these families. The first\r\ninternal comparisons (field tests for offspring tests in practical farms) of LOHMANN BROWN PLUS layers and layers of\r\nthe common breeding line LOHMANN\r\nBROWN Classic showed that the laying\r\nperformance is at a similar level and that\r\nalso the egg quality, especially the shell\r\ncolour and breaking strength, can definitely keep up with the outstanding performance of the LOHMANN BROWN CLASSIC\r\nlayers. Therefore, the selection on a higher\r\nbody weight has not influenced the quality characteristics\r\n

\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nResults of LOHMANN\r\nBROWN PLUS in Random\r\nSample Tests<\/strong>

\r\nAs in 2010 the strains for the 9th Bavarian Random Sample Test of laying hybrids\r\nhad to be registered, it was decided that\r\nlayers of the new line should participate\r\nin the laying performance test. The very\r\ngood results of LOHMANN BROWN PLUS\r\nin this comparison are shown in table 1.\r\nThe table also contains the results of the 1st\r\nNorth Rhine-Westphalian Random Sample\r\nTest. Here, layers from the same rearing as\r\nfor Kitzingen were housed in small aviary\r\nsystems in order to test the same strains\r\nunder different environmental conditions.\r\nBoth comparisons prove that the LOHMANN BROWN PLUS layers absolutely keep\r\nup with the performances of the LOHMANN BROWN CLASSIC and especially in\r\nthe results of the Haus D\u00fcsse show a considerably higher body weight.


\r\n\r\nUse of male chicks <\/strong>

\r\nA secondary aspect of the higher body\r\nweight is the fact that at the same age the\r\nmale chicks of LOHMANN BROWN PLUS\r\nare slightly heavier than those of LOHMANN BROWN CLASSIC. This characteristic\r\nsupports, however only to a minor extent, the fattening respectively the rearing of the male chicks as small broilers or\r\nas cocks. Unfortunately, the effect of the\r\nhigher body weight occurs not before the\r\nsixth to eighth week of life and even then,\r\nis not that big. \r\n


\r\n\r\nName of the strain might\r\nlead to misunderstandings <\/strong>

\r\n\r\nFrom the vantage point of the present, the\r\ndesignation of the new layer may not have\r\nbeen that favourable, because it could\r\neasily be confused with the layer \u201eLOHMANN BROWN EXTRA\u201c having a higher egg\r\nweight (at the same body weight) as the\r\ncommon LOHMANN BROWN CLASSIC,\r\nbut having only a slightly and nearly not\r\nmeasurable higher body weight. The suffix\r\n\u201cPLUS\u201d, however, indicates a plus with regard to the body weight and not the egg\r\nweight, which is even not desired for organic egg production and marketing. Retrospectively, a naming with a clear reference to the increased body weight would\r\nhave been preferable.
