{"id":52071,"date":"2020-08-31T14:07:12","date_gmt":"2020-08-31T12:07:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lohmann-breeders.com\/the-first-live-e-coli-vaccine-now-registered-in-europe-too\/"},"modified":"2020-08-31T14:07:12","modified_gmt":"2020-08-31T12:07:12","slug":"the-first-live-e-coli-vaccine-now-registered-in-europe-too","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lohmann-breeders.com\/zh-hans\/the-first-live-e-coli-vaccine-now-registered-in-europe-too\/","title":{"rendered":"The first live E. coli vaccine now registered in Europe too"},"content":{"rendered":"<em><strong>In broilers, layers and breeders, infections with avian pathogenic E. coli (APEC) are one of the most economically significant diseases in poultry.<\/strong><\/em><br><br>\r\n\r\n\r\nMulti-factorial primary causes such as respiratory infections, immunosuppressive\r\ninfections (e.g. Gumboro, Chicken Anemia)\r\nand environmental stress situations (e.g.\r\nextreme temperature changes, ammonia,\r\ndust) may lead to secondary E. coli infections. Even primary infections with certain\r\nvery pathogenic Coli strains may result in\r\nsepticemia, airsacculitis and egg peritonitis and are causes for increased mortality\r\nrates and reduced flock performance.<br><br>\r\n\r\n\r\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lohmann-breeders.com\/media\/2020\/08\/j40.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"655\" height=\"800\" class=\"imgcenter\" \/><br>\r\n<em><strong>E. coli induced peritonitis<\/strong><\/em>\r\n\r\n<br><br>\r\nBesides indirect measures to control predisposing factors, antibiotic treatment\r\nof affected birds has also been common\r\npractice for many years. However, depending on local regulations, only a very limited\r\nnumber of antibiotics are licensed in most\r\ncountries without any withdrawal period\r\nfor the eggs. Furthermore, the general discussion about multi resistant bacteria, suchas ESBL\u2019s as a potential risk for humans, limit\r\nthe use of antibiotics to treat E. coli infections.<br><br>\r\n\r\nFor many years now, autogenous inactivated vaccines against E. coli alone or in combination with other bacterial pathogens\r\nsuch as Pasteurella or Erysipelas have been\r\nused to control E. coli infections and to\r\nlimit the economical impact of increased\r\nmortality, drops in egg production and\r\nreduced flock performance in future commercial layer or breeder flocks. <br><br>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<blockquote>\r\nThese vaccines are unfortunately expensive to produce and need to be administered by injection. Furthermore, continuous work need to be done to follow the\r\nactual field strains, type them for virulence\r\ngenes and adapt the vaccine strains for the\r\nnext flock accordingly. <\/blockquote>\r\n\r\n <br><br>\r\n\r\nFor some years now, in the United States\r\nand in other parts of the world, a live E. coli\r\nvaccine produced by Pfizer Animal Health,\r\nhas been successfully applied. The vaccine Poulvac E. coli contains an aroA-Gen\r\ndeleted E. coli O78 strain which is administered with a spray application as early as\r\nthe first day of life. The vaccine strain lacks\r\npathogenicity and induces cell-mediated\r\nimmunity and local antibodies. In the field\r\ncross-protection against Coli serotypes has\r\nbeen demonstrated. The vaccine has now\r\nbeen approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMEA) in Europa as well.<br><br>\r\n\r\n\r\nThe vaccine should be applied by coarse\r\nspray on day-old layers and breeders. The\r\nvaccine should neither be used within 6\r\nweeks prior to the onset of egg production nor during the entire production period. The vaccine strain, which can be differentiated by laboratory techniques from E.\r\ncoli field strains, could be re-isolated from\r\norgans of vaccinated chicks up to 6 days\r\nafter vaccination and from the environment up to 5 weeks. As with all live bacterial vaccines, it is important to ensure that\r\nno antibiotics be used at least one week\r\nbefore and after vaccination as these will\r\nhave a negative influence on the efficacy\r\nof the vaccination.<br><br>\r\n\r\nHopefully, this new vaccine which will now\r\nbe available in Europe, will demonstrate\r\nsimilar efficacy as reported from the U.S.\r\nand other countries.
