More than 80% of these layers are still housed in cages. <\/strong><\/em><br><br>\r\n\r\n\r\nThe percentage of table eggs, which are\r\nproduced in alternative management systems, is yet below 20 %. However, management in barn and free-range systems is a\r\ngrowth segment.<br><br>\r\n\r\nAccess to the Australian market is not only\r\ndifficult due the great remoteness. The import of chicks is not allowed; only a maximum quantity of 3,000 hatching eggs can\r\nbe imported. The normal wait for a place\r\nin the national quarantine hatchery is\r\nfive years and the import costs are about\r\n200,000 Australian dollars, which is about\r\n160,000 Euros. These costs are predominantly caused by necessary laboratory\r\nexaminations defined in a sixteen-page\r\nrequirements catalogue. Thus, the import\r\nof parent stock or even layer hatching eggs\r\nis impossible.<br><br>\r\n\r\nThis massive import barrier is also a reason\r\nfor the high price of 1.65 Euros per day-old\r\ncommercial layer chick. <br><br>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<blockquote>After two years of preparation, the first\r\n<strong>LOHMANN BROWN<\/strong> grandparent stock\r\nhatching eggs were shipped to Adelaide in\r\nJune 2011. <strong>LOHMANN<\/strong> Layers Australia will\r\ntherefore be able to deliver the first commercials to customers all over Australia this\r\nyear. The day-old chicks are transported\r\nin trucks provided by specialized subcontractors. The distances to be managed are\r\nenormous as Australia\u2019s north-south expansion is about 3,700 km and the westeast expansion is about 4,000 km.<\/blockquote>\r\n\r\n <br><br>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nThe official market launch of <strong>LOHMANN\r\nBROWN<\/strong> took place during the PIX conference in Broadbeach at the Gold Coast in\r\nMay 2012. Dr. Wiebke Icken, Sven Svensson\r\nand Sales Manager Michael B. Seidel presented to an audience of more than 100\r\ninvited guests the manifold advantages\r\nof <strong>LOHMANN BROWN<\/strong>. The attendance\r\nat the two-day conference as well as the\r\nfeedback on our \u2018new\u2019 product in Australia\r\nwas very good. Some binding orders have\r\nalready been placed. According to the\r\nconsensus and conservatively estimated,\r\nwithin the next years <strong>LOHMANN BROWN<\/strong>\r\nshould be able to reach a market share of\r\n30-40 %. <br><br>\r\n\r\nThe grandparent stock farm of <strong>LOHMANN<\/strong>\r\nLayers Australia is situated in Bendigo, a\r\ntwo-hours drive north of Melbourne. Since spring 2011, there <strong>LOHMANN BROWN<\/strong>\r\ngrandparent stocks are reared. The first\r\nflock of parent stock consisting of 10,000\r\nlayers has now entered the laying period,\r\nso that <strong>LOHMANN BROWN<\/strong> layers will\r\nmove in Australian houses starting in September 2012. Dr. Greg Underwood and his\r\nteam of <strong>LOHMANN<\/strong> Layers Australia are already rearing further flocks of parent stock\r\nin order to supply in the future also bigger\r\nnumbers of layers, as requested by the\r\nAustralian egg producers.\r\n <br><br>\r\n \r\n Visits to different egg production sites\r\nhave shown that in Australia, too, a trend\r\nfrom cage systems towards alternative\r\nmanagement systems with a large part\r\nof free-range systems has already begun.\r\nThe staffs of the visited layer farms were\r\nhighly interested in the suitability of the\r\n<strong>LOHMANN BROWN<\/strong> layer for non-cage\r\nsystems and particularly in its nest acceptance. In this context, experiences among\r\nothers made in European countries, being the pioneers in alternative housing\r\nsystems, demonstrate the importance of\r\nan optimized flock management. Rearing adapted to the subsequent housing\r\nsystem is the most essential factor for a\r\nsuccessful egg production. Laying hens\r\nmust learn to actively move in the various functional areas. Only then they will\r\nproduce a high number of saleable nest eggs in barn systems. Those responsible\r\nare aware of this precondition, however, it\r\nis not yet optimally implemented in some\r\nof the visited farms. \r\n<br><br>\r\n\r\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lohmann-breeders.com\/media\/2020\/08\/j35.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"633\" height=\"800\" class=\"imgcenter\" \/>\r\n<br><br>\r\n\r\nFree-range systems are setting additional\r\nchallenges to hen and egg producer.\r\nThere is an increased disease pressure in\r\nsuch systems. Furthermore, a good acceptance as well as a reasonable environmental\r\nprotection near the houses requires a varied design of the outside area. Thus, the\r\nmanagement factors to be considered are\r\neven more diverse in free-range systems\r\nthan in a closed housing system and they\r\nare also even more under critical public\r\nobservation. Similar to Europe, the Australian food retail industry focuses on animal\r\nwelfare and presses the egg producers to\r\nchange the housing systems. Meeting the\r\nsame egg quality standards, free-range\r\neggs are offered preferably. Throughout\r\nthe whole production process the shell of\r\nthe table eggs should have a nicely dark\r\nbrown colour and should be as unbreakable as possible \u2013 requirements for which\r\nthe <strong>LOHMANN BROWN<\/strong> is perfectly suited.\r\nSo, everything is ready for the successful\r\nstart of <strong>LOHMANN BROWN<\/strong> Classic on the\r\nAustralian market!<br><br>\r\n\r\n<em>Dr. Wiebke Icken, Genetics<br>\r\nMichael B.
