The event was opened with the welcoming speech of Hinrich Leerhoff, Managing Director of LOHMANN TIERZUCHT.<br><br>\r\nSubsequently, Prof. Dr. Harald von Witzke\r\nfrom Humboldt Universit\u00e4t Berlin informed\r\nabout \u201cIncreasing agricultural prices \u2013 Challenges for global nutrition and climate protection\u201d. In his presentation, he described\r\nhow the development of raw materials\r\nprices is related to the continuously growing world population and thus, a steadily\r\nincreasing food requirement.<br><br>\r\nDr. Matthias Schmutz, geneticist of\r\nLOHMANN TIERZUCHT, introduced new\r\nbreeding products of LTZ in his speech.\r\nIn order to fulfil the demands of the world\r\nmarket for an improved exploitation of feed\r\nresources, specific CONVERTER lines for\r\nwhite and brown-coloured eggs with a\r\nparticularly good feed conversion, have\r\nbeen developed and presented for the\r\nfirst time at the Franchise Distributor Meeting in Berlin.<br><br>\r\nProf. Dr. Rudolf Preisinger, Chief Geneticist\r\nand Managing Director of LTZ, introduced\r\nanother new breed. His presentation \u201cDualpurpose chicken for broiler farms and egg\r\nproducers\u201d addressed the current topic of\r\nhow to use male day-old chicks of laying\r\nhybrids. In this context, LTZ has developed\r\na line combination called \u201cLOHMANN DUAL\u201d\r\nof which the male birds can be fattened and\r\nthe females can lay eggs.<br><br>\r\nThe topics on the second day covered issues\r\nrelated to animal health and was opened by\r\nKeiron Forbes, Agri-research (Ireland) Ltd.,<br><br>\r\nwith his lecture \u201cFaster Horses\u201c. He reported\r\non experiences in the discussion with poultry farmers regarding feed costs, animal\r\nhealth and production efficiency of laying\r\nhens. Conditions which have to be provided\r\nby feeding in order to meet future expectations in terms of performance and efficiency\r\nwere also discussed<br><br>\r\nIn the next presentation \u201cManaging layers\r\nsuccessfully in the United States\u201d, Chris Pierce,\r\nHeritage PMS Inc., USA, explained, from his\r\npoint of view, the key aspects of successful\r\negg production. In his lecture \u201cMarek\u2019s Disease \u2013 still an issue or problem solved?\u201d, Prof.\r\nDr. Klaus Osterrieder, Freie Universit\u00e4t Berlin,\r\nreferred to the current situation and current\r\nissues regarding further research on the\r\nMarek virus as well as the application and\r\ndevelopment of new vaccine viruses. <br><br>\r\n\r\nDr. Matthias Voss, Veterinarian and Head\r\nof the Veterinary Laboratory of LTZ, gave a\r\ngeneral overview of future trends in poultry\r\nvaccination. He pointed out that there are\r\nthree essential directions in the development of vaccines: recombinant vector vaccines, new live vaccines and the development of new dosage forms. <br><br>\r\n\r\n\r\nThen, Prof. Dr. Henner Simianer, GeorgAugust-Universit\u00e4t G\u00f6ttingen, discussed in\r\nhis presentation \u201cSynbreed: Genomic selection and breeding planning\u201c the potential\r\nof genomic selection in layer breeding and\r\nintroduced the project \u201cSynbreed\u201d to the audience. After the lunch break, all participants\r\nwent on a three-hour guided tour of the German capital including the important sights.\r\nThe programme of the day concluded with\r\na festive dinner in the historic waterworks. <br><br>\r\nOn the third day, the attendees started with\r\na company tour of the franchise hatchery\r\nSpreenhagener Vermehrungsbetrieb f\u00fcr\r\nLegehennen located in the south of Berlin\r\nin Bestensee.
