{"id":52120,"date":"2020-09-01T18:57:21","date_gmt":"2020-09-01T16:57:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lohmann-breeders.com\/two-new-hens-at-the-start-lsl-and-lb-converter\/"},"modified":"2020-09-01T18:57:21","modified_gmt":"2020-09-01T16:57:21","slug":"two-new-hens-at-the-start-lsl-and-lb-converter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lohmann-breeders.com\/zh-hans\/two-new-hens-at-the-start-lsl-and-lb-converter\/","title":{"rendered":"Two new hens at the start: LSL- and LB-CONVERTER"},"content":{"rendered":"<em><strong>Conservation of resources and sustainability \u2013 two issues, which are becoming\r\nmore and more important against the background of a growing world population. <\/strong><\/em> <br><br><br>\r\n\r\n\r\nEconomy, science and environmental protection organisations are discussing the\r\nbig task of the future: to supply the world population with sufficient animal protein\r\nand at the same time, to solve distribution\r\nproblems in food provision. Experts assume\r\nthat the demand for animal foodstuffs will\r\ndouble by the year 2050. Thus, high performance as well as good efficiency of the\r\nlivestock are important preconditions for\r\nfeeding the world population. The limited\r\nreserves of agricultural areas require the\r\nhighest possible generation of animal protein per hectare of agricultural area, whereas the production of eggs represents one\r\nof the most efficient ways in achieving that\r\ngoal.<br><br>\r\n\r\n\r\nIn this context, an even more efficient layer\r\nin terms of an improved feed conversion,\r\nmirrors these ongoing discussions. The LOHMANN LSL- and LB-CONVERTER should\r\nfulfil this task. Both layers are sub-lines of\r\nthe well-known <strong>LOHMANN SELECTED LEGHORN (LSL)<\/strong> and <strong>LOHMANN BROWN<\/strong> layers.\r\nFor several years, the breeding of these birds\r\nmainly targeted an even better feed conversion. However, this does not mean that\r\nall other selection criteria are disregarded.\r\nThe challenge for the breeder lies rather in\r\nthe new adjustment of the selection index.\r\nMore than 20 different performance, quality\r\nand behavioural characteristics have to be\r\nevaluated anew. This is due to the fact that\r\nalso for the CONVERTER lines, \u201conly\u201d 100 \r\npercent of the complete selection potential\r\nis available for distribution to the individual\r\ncharacteristics. In order to achieve the main\r\ngoal of an improved feed conversion, which\r\nis the ratio of kilogram feed required per\r\nkilogram egg mass produced, a minor reduction in body weight of the CONVERTER\r\nlines was accepted. A reduced body weight\r\ndecreases the maintenance requirement of\r\nthe layers and contributes considerably to\r\nthe improvement of feed conversion. Percentagely more feed is available for the layers in the production of egg mass. Due to\r\nthe stronger emphasis of feed conversion\r\nin the selection index, there is an unfortunate as a side effect of having a slightly\r\nlower genetic progress in terms of laying\r\nperformance and egg weight. However,\r\nno cutbacks in breeding were made where\r\nviability was concerned. \r\n<br><br>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lohmann-breeders.com\/media\/2020\/09\/p66.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"597\" class=\"imgcenter\" \/> <br>\r\n<em><strong>Capturing individual feed intake in the pure lines<\/strong><\/em>\r\n<br><br>\r\n\r\n\r\nChart 1 shows the new laying performance standards of LSL- and LB-CLASSIC\r\nand CONVERTER at 72 weeks of age in\r\na cage system. Here, the advantages of\r\nCONVERTER layers as compared to CLASSIC lines are obvious: better feed conversion\r\ndue to lower feed intake and lower body\r\nweight, although the figures also indicate\r\nthat CONVERTER layers do not achieve the\r\nmaximum possible egg mass production.\r\nWhen choosing a suitable layer, environmental conditions are crucial. Markets billing\r\naccording to kilogram egg mass and not to\r\negg quantity could obtain an economic advantage with the CONVERTER lines, as higher\r\negg weights would be awarded additionally\r\nwhen billed according to egg mass, i.e. provided that the feed is always of good quality! \r\n\r\n<br><br>\r\n\r\nIf the feed quality is below average, neither\r\nCLASSIC nor CONVERTER layers will be able\r\nto achieve the standard performances listed\r\nbelow. Countries which cannot cover their\r\nown requirements of raw materials for feed\r\nand thus, have to import feedstuff, could\r\ncounteract the high-priced feed market by\r\nmeans of the more feed efficient CONVERTER\r\nlines. Compared to the CLASSIC lines in egg\r\nproduction, 60 respectively 90 g of feed per\r\nkilogram egg mass can be saved with the\r\nCONVERTER lines. <br><br>\r\n\r\n\r\nBesides egg number, egg weight and feed\r\nefficiency, the hens\u2019 body weight can also\r\nbe decisive for choosing a suitable layer.\r\nEspecially in markets in which profitable\r\nprices are still obtained for spent hens, a\r\ndeduction of 100 g in body weight could\r\nhave an adverse effect on the economic\r\nsuccess of the egg producer. Due to their\r\nreduced feed intake of 5 to 7 g, CONVER\u2013\r\nTER lines have a lower body weight. This\r\nhas to be considered particularly under\r\nsuboptimal housing conditions.
