This genomic selection has\r\nbeen proven and leads to an increase in the\r\nperformance rate in dairy cattle. With a large\r\nnumber of markers, i.e. up to 500,000 per animal, genetic estimations can now be reliably\r\npredicted regardless of age. The markers are\r\ndistributed throughout the entire genome of the animals thus enabling reliable results\r\nas all relevant breeding traits are available. <br><br>\r\n\r\nThe maximum number of saleable eggs\r\nproduced per hen housed particularly determines the commercial success of laying\r\nhens. This is achieved by combining high\r\nlaying performance with commendable vitality and is therefore our primary selection\r\ncriteria in the selection of genetic stock. <br><br>\r\n\r\nDuring the last ten years, no other competitor has managed to achieve anything close\r\nto the good shell stability of the laying hens\r\nat <strong>LOHMANN TIERZUCHT.<\/strong>  <br><br>\r\n\r\nAll the competitors spend their efforts propagating on an extension of the production\r\ncycle thereby forgetting that it is the shell\r\nquality and not the laying rate which determines the optimum production period of a flock. Those who do not have shell stability\r\nunder control should not be promoting a\r\nlonger and most of all, unrealistic production cycle without moulting.<br><br>\r\n\r\nIn addition to the exact measurement of\r\nshell stability by means of different methods and in different stages of a production\r\ncycle, the real emphasis in breeding targets\r\nhas a decisive effect on the annual improvement rate. These comprehensive phenotypic measurements of the quality parameter at <strong>LOHMANN TIERZUCHT<\/strong> will now be\r\nsupplemented by genomic markers.<br><br>\r\n\r\n\r\nThe most promising males, as based on the\r\nperformance, behaviour and quality parameters, can now be selected already in\r\nthe rearing period before sexual maturity.\r\nSince the measurement of late egg quality\r\ncan only take place after the reproduction\r\nof pedigree hens, the application of markers for genomic selection contributes to a\r\nsubstantial advantage in precision and can\r\nbe simultaneously applied for all persistency traits even earlier. Genomic selection is\r\nonly possible when different parameters\r\nto describe egg shell stability in a breeding\r\nprogramme have been measured in numerous birds over several generations and\r\nstored in a large database. <br><br>\r\n\r\nFor more than ten years now, <strong>LOHMANN\r\nTIERZUCHT<\/strong> is the first breeding company\r\nwhich utilises equipment for the mea\u2013\r\nsurement of dynamic stability in eggs in\r\nits breeding programme. Research was\r\ncarried out in close collaboration with\r\nscientists from Belgium and Scotland and\r\ndeveloped for practical use. If competitors were to now advertise that they have\r\nbeen using these equipment, this would\r\nonly be a copy of the recording methods\r\nwhich have been applied at <strong>LOHMANN\r\nTIERZUCHT<\/strong> years ago. As the breeding\r\nprogress cannot be achieved exclusively\r\nin a single generation but is based rather on the results of a continuing and rising process, the disadvantage\r\nin terms of time must\r\nfirst be regained. This\r\nis even more difficult\r\nwhen the levels of the\r\nown lines have been\r\nlower so far. Since all\r\nother strains have been\r\nperforming remarkably poorer up until\r\nnow, catching up will\r\nbe even more difficult\r\nsince new and even\r\nbetter recording methods at <strong>LOHMANN TIERZUCHT <\/strong>are already being further developed.<br><br>\r\n\r\n\r\nElaborate analyses of\r\nthe vitality of individual\r\noutstanding families\r\nhave led to the identification of especially\r\nmeaningful markers in\r\ndifferent strains. With\r\nthe aid of the same, it\r\nis now possible to sustainably improve the\r\nperformance stability of the next generations. <br><br>\r\n\r\n\r\nWith this selection and product campaign,\r\nGenomChicks\u00ae, <strong>LOHMANN TIERZUCHT<\/strong> will\r\nyet again set a mark in terms of applied research and the rapid implementation in\r\nbreeding practice. A further milestone in\r\nthe breeding of laying hens will definitely be\r\nimitated again in other breeding companies,\r\nbut this will only be a copy.<br><br>\r\n\r\nThe first parent stocks of white as well\r\nas brown layers from the programme\r\nGenomChicks\u00ae will be available in spring\r\nof 2013. These will be introduced at the\r\nVIV Asia Show in Bangkok and offer tested quality for performance-based producers with different management and\r\nproduction systems in the future \u2013 from\r\ncage-housing to floor and free-range\r\nmanagement all the way to very demanding organic housing.
