\r\nAs you may perhaps remember, we announced the two new layer lines, LB- and LSL-Converter in the last edition of our Lohmann Poultry News. Two layers which have an excellent feed conversion ratio thereby contributing to more sustainability\r\nand conservation of resources. Aside from economical aspects, ethical aspects also need to be considered in animal breeding. One of these animal welfare issues is indisputably the culling of day-old male layers. Therefore, different strategies and\r\napproaches, e.g. sex determination on incubated or rather on non-incubated eggs have to be further developed or rather,\r\nthe utilisation of male layer chicks need to be extensively explored. In regard to the rearing of males, one proposal is the socalled \u201cSpring Chicken\u201d and the other, the dual purpose chicken. What exactly is a dual purpose chicken? Which performances can be expected and how the concept looks like from an economical point of view, are described in the following article. <\/strong><\/em>


\r\n\r\nWhilst hens lay eggs, the cockerels have to\r\ngain more meat. The dual purpose chicken\r\nunites both of these production forms,\r\nbut it may also require a compromise from\r\nboth sides: Laying more eggs and at the\r\nsame time gaining more meat, is simply\r\nimplausible. Nevertheless, with the crossbreed \u201cLOHMANN DUAL\u201d<\/strong>,we have attempted to achieve this act of balance.

\r\n\r\nContrary to the new Converter line which is\r\nthe result of precise selection from existing\r\nlines, the LOHMANN DUAL<\/strong> is a new cross\r\nbetween layer and broiler genetics and\r\ncombines the advantages of both breeding\r\nlines in the best way possible. All females\r\nand males of the same hatch are either\r\nreared together or separately. However, in\r\norder to exploit their full growing potential,\r\nmales need to be reared separately. If you\r\nrear both genders together, you will have\r\nto orientate on the females to optimally\r\nprepare them for laying. However, in using\r\nstandardised grower and developer laying\r\nhen feed, losses in meat gain on the part of\r\nthe male has to be accepted. On the other\r\nhand, heated houses for the first weeks are\r\nlinked to high energy costs which can be\r\nused more efficiently when rearing all the\r\nchicks together.

\r\n\r\nLohmann DUAL Layer<\/strong>

\r\n\r\nUnlike the LOHMANN BROWN<\/strong>, LOHMANN\r\nDUAL<\/strong> layers have a larger appetite. In production, feed consumption is up to 140 g\r\nper hen and day. Together with an expected egg number of 250 eggs per annum\r\nand a slightly lighter egg weight, Lohmann Dual has a less favourable feed\r\nefficiency than LOHMANN BROWN<\/strong>. When\r\nincluding feed costs from rearing into\r\neconomic calculations, feeding expenses\r\nalone are \u20ac 3 higher per hen housed up to\r\n68 weeks of age, i.e. assuming a feed price\r\nof \u20ac 35 \/ 100 kg of feed. Furthermore, egg\r\nweight is in a much higher range for Lohmann Dual than it is for Lohmann Brown\r\nlayers. Egg size is particularly smaller at\r\nthe beginning of production.

\r\nLess eggs and additionally, smaller eggs, reduce egg\r\nmass production and therefore, the profit\r\nper hen. The difference in profit between\r\n LOHMANN DUAL<\/strong> and LOHMANN BROWN<\/strong>\r\nminus feed costs is \u20ac 6 per bird. This economic disadvantage as well as the appreciable lower ecological balance, resulting\r\nfrom a higher feed intake with simultaneously reduced production of high-quality\r\nfood, can only be compensated to a small\r\nextent by an increased gain of meat in\r\n LOHMANN DUAL<\/strong> birds. A practicable and\r\neconomically viable egg production via\r\ndual purpose chickens is therefore only\r\npossible when these eggs are sold at a\r\nhigher egg price. The lighter brown eggshell colour which is clearly different as\r\ncompared to LOHMANN BROWN<\/strong> eggs,\r\ncould be helpful to point out that Lohmann Dual eggs do indeed have a unique\r\nfeature.

\r\n\r\nLohmann Dual Male\/Broiler <\/strong>

\r\nLive weight gain in LOHMANN DUAL<\/strong> is \r\nmoderate in comparison to a slow-growing\r\nbroiler. From week three until ten weeks\r\nof age, dual birds and broilers grow further apart. Even on a long-term fattening\r\nperiod of 12 weeks, slow-growing broilers\r\nmight already become adipose although\r\nboth breeds had a slight difference in body\r\nweight. Fed with broiler diets for 70 days,\r\nthe dual cockerels attained a live weight of\r\n3 kg. The weight of the carcass was around\r\n2 kg. In terms of carcass performance, there\r\nwere hardly any differences between the\r\ndual cockerels and conventional broilers.\r\nThe amount of valuable parts was at 50 %.\r\nUnlike special broiler lines, dual cockerels\r\nhave a much lesser portion of breast meat\r\nin favour of the portion of the thighs.

\r\n\r\n\r\nThe fattening performance of LOHMANN DUAL<\/strong> males is very satisfactory. \r\nFeed conversion ratio is with 1:2.5 much better as\r\ncompared to a LOHMANN BROWN<\/strong> cockerel\r\n(1:4). However, the economic advantage of\r\n\u20ac 1.20 for one cockerel of LOHMANN DUAL<\/strong>\r\nis accompanied by an economic disadvantage of \u20ac 6.00 for each LOHMANN DUAL<\/strong>\r\nLayer which is due to 40 % higher feed expenses per egg. Furthermore, the production cycle of aLOHMANN DUAL<\/strong> layer is at\r\nthis time much shorter than for LOHMANN BROWN<\/strong> layers. At an age of 68 weeks, laying performance of LOHMANN DUAL<\/strong> is\r\ndecreased to less than 50 %. Therefore,\r\na prolonged production period to 75\/80\r\nweeks of age is unprofitable. However,\r\nthere is some good news too. So far, all performances for Lohmann Dual shown are\r\nbased on an unselected flock. This means,\r\nthe LOHMANN DUAL<\/strong> birds available are the\r\nfirst approach.

\r\n\r\nBy consequent performance testing and\r\nselection on LOHMANN <\/strong>layers, genetic progress in relevant traits can be expected in\r\nthe coming years.\r\n
