Despite great efforts, the industry has still not managed to reach the\r\nhigh level of 1990, which is a goal for\r\nmany industries. It was the year of the\r\ncollapse of the Soviet Union and the beginning of a new era.<\/strong><\/em>


\r\n\r\nDevelopment plans are often out of reach\r\nand despite tremendous growth in some\r\nregions, the past few years have shown\r\nstagnation in egg production. According\r\nto official figures, egg production is currently at about 42 billion eggs, of which\r\njust over 20 % (9.3 billion eggs) are produced in small house plants (Fig. 1, next\r\npage).

\r\n\r\nWhat seems to be quite unrealistic when\r\ncompared to the rest of Europe, the per\r\ncapita consumption of eggs lies at 297\r\neggs per year \u2013 a high level indeed. By\r\n2020, this is expected to increase even more, i.e. up to 315 eggs per capita. However, if one looks at the actual development\r\nmore closely, you will quickly discover that\r\nthe increase in production takes place in\r\nonly a few regions (Fig. 2).

\r\n\r\nIn addition, it is striking that the largest\r\nincrease is expected in regions that have\r\nlimited feed resources, for example in Krasnojarskij Kraj Tumenskiy, Kemerowskiy and\r\nin the Nowosibirskiy region, which are in\r\nSiberia or in the Leningradskiy region (St.\r\nPetersburg) in the North. Southern regions\r\nof Russia and the Volga region, which have\r\nenormous reserves of feed, are rarely mentioned in the plans.

\r\n\r\n\r\nLike almost all countries of the world, Russia has huge problems with obtaining\r\naffordable raw feed materials. In recent\r\nyears, grain was immediately exported after been harvested and poultry farms had\r\nto buy their feed at very high prices from\r\ndistant regions. Raw materials that could\r\nbe bought at relatively affordable prices,\r\noften did not meet the required quality. Grain from subsidized reserves of the\r\ncountry especially led to big problems due\r\nto their toxic load. Flocks which were affected due to the consumption of this feed\r\ndisplayed a deterioration in performance\r\nand also resulted in mortality. Despite\r\nrapid increases in feed prices from about\r\nRUB 4,000 per ton in 2008 \u20132009 and up\r\nto 12,000 \u201314,000 RUB\/ton in May 2013\r\ndespite a relatively constant currency exchange rate of approximately RUB 40\/EUR,\r\negg prices remained constant, with the\r\nexception of seasonal fluctuations in the\r\nsummer months. For years now, the delivery prices of the farms (Figure 3, green line)\r\nhas been under RUB 30 per 10 eggs and\r\nthe retailer sale price is at about RUB 40 per\r\n10 eggs (Figure 3, blue line).

\r\n\r\nThrough the increasing productivity and\r\nefficiency of LOHMANN TIERZUCHT\u2019s<\/strong> laying hens and both of our leading breeds,\r\nthe LSL-Classic and LB-Classic, we could\r\nconstantly expand our market shares over the years despite stagnation in the market.\r\nThe top results of our best customers (Sverdlowskaya PF \u2013 LTZ customer since 1995,\r\nPyschminskaya PF \u2013 customer since 2001,\r\nChelyabinsk PF \u2013 customer since 2001,\r\nRoskar \u2013 customer since 2004, Okskaya\r\nPF and Seniyawinskaya) have set benchmarks for the entire industry (Table 1). The\r\nstrength of our hens is particularly noticeable in the following figure. Eleven of the\r\n17 largest egg producing enterprises in\r\nRussia (11.2 of 32.7 billion eggs produced)\r\nkeep LOHMANN TIERZUCHT <\/strong>laying hens\r\n(Total number of LOHMANN TIERZUCHT<\/strong>\r\ncustomers in Russia – 17) (Figure 4).

\r\nDue to a constant increase in performance\r\n(dia.1), very efficient feed consumption and\r\na constantly increasing laying period, these\r\npoultry farms are also the most economically efficient ones (Figure 6, next page).

\r\n\r\n\r\n\"\"\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n


\r\nToday, almost 40 % of Russian eggs are\r\nproduced by LOHMANN TIERZUCHT<\/strong> hens,\r\nwith a rising trend.

\r\n\r\nAnother major problem is the supply of\r\nchicks and \/ or pullets to small and medium poultry farms. In the past, i.e. until 1990,\r\nalmost every poultry farm had its own parent stock flocks as well as an own hatchery.\r\nIt was therefore possible to offer parent\r\nstock chicks from these breeding farms at\r\na cheaper price.

\r\n\r\nThe progressive reconstruction of the\r\nfarms has resulted in an imbalance between the capacity of the facilities and\r\nthe possibilities of the hatcheries. There\r\nis hardly a hatchery which can produce\r\n50,000 – 80,000 chicks in one hatch. There\r\nare very often facilities which are able to\r\nhandle such a capacity but since the main\r\nfocus has been placed on the table egg\r\nmarket, there is hardly any interest to supply the free market with chicks or pullets.\r\nAs a result of this, LOHMANN TIERZUCHT GMBH<\/strong>\r\n now places a great emphasis on\r\nthe expansion of our franchise distributors.

\r\n\r\nThere are already the first success stories\r\nsuch as in the franchise facilities in Kemerovo Inskaya PF which recently sold nearly\r\n4 million chicks\/ year, Vologodskiy Centr\r\nPticewodstwa in Vologda \u2013 about 2.5 million chicks, Waraksino in Izhevsk \u2013 nearly\r\n2 million chicks or Roskar, Pyshminskaya or\r\nSverdlowskaya), which have been supplying the market.

\r\n\r\nWith the inclusion of a layer operation, the\r\nfarm Aleksandrowskiy in Ryasan, which is\r\nLTZ\u2019s partner since 2005, the largest breeding farm in Russia, Okskaya was established.

\r\n\r\nIn 2011, they started keeping LOHMANN\r\nTIERZUCHT<\/strong> laying hens and in 2013, the\r\nlargest and most unique hatchery in Russia was opened (Fig. 5). With the support of\r\nPas Reform Technik, 15 million LOHMANN<\/strong>\r\nhens are produced here every year. The\r\ncapacity can and should be doubled in a\r\nsecond phase. In order to utilize the hatchery\u2019s full capacity of over 250,000, LSL and\r\nLB parents are being reared here. Thanks\r\nto modern transport technology, farms\r\ncan be supplied with day-old chicks within\r\na radius of about 2,000 km.

\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nA major challenge remains in the expensive transportation of PS \/GP chicks to Russia. Together with our customers, we are\r\nworking on an appropriate solution.

\r\n\r\n\r\nDespite difficult market conditions, we still\r\ncontinue to see Russia as a very important\r\ngrowth market.
