Worldwide, additional testing stations are located\r\nin the Czech Republic, North Carolina (USA) and Japan. These\r\ntests supply comparable figures of performance and behaviour traits which are captured under standardised conditions.<\/strong><\/em>\r\n\r\n\r\n<br><br><br>\r\n\r\n\r\nTherefore, breeding companies provide\r\ndifferent strains, depending on the query\r\nof the testing stations. The tricky thing in\r\nthis matter is always that none of the participants knows the results of these comparable tests in advance. However, Lohmann Tierzucht can be very satisfied\r\nwith the results of the latest tests at Haus\r\nD\u00fcsse in North Rhine Westphalia. <br><br>\r\n\r\nThe white layers tested were of Lohmann\r\nLSL and Dekalb White origin. They were\r\nhoused in small aviaries for a production\r\nperiod of 364 days. In total, 252 layers of\r\neach strain were housed in seven compartments with 36 layers each. Due to the request of the testing stations, all layers were\r\nhatched in the same hatchery, reared together and transferred into the production\r\nunits at 18 weeks of age under the same\r\nfeeding and light regime.<br><br>\r\n\r\n\r\nThe average laying performances in a production cycle of 364 days were above 91\r\n%, thus very good for both strains. However, high mortality rates of Dekalb layers\r\ndiminished egg numbers per hen housed\r\n(HH). The average egg number per HH was\r\n331 for LSL hens which is 12 eggs more\r\nthan the average for Dekalb hens. Despite\r\nthe higher egg weight for Dekalb layers,\r\nthe total egg mass production per HH\r\nwas 0.5 kg lesser in Dekalb layers as compared to LSL layers. The feed intake was\r\nalso higher for Dekalb layers. The calculated feed intake was at around 113 g for\r\nthe LSL hens on a daily basis. In regard to\r\n1 kg of egg mass produced, one LSL layer\r\nconsumed an average of 1.99 kg of feed,\r\nwhereas one Dekalb layer consumed 2.11\r\nkg. With a purchase price of 30.69 \u20ac\/dt of\r\nfeed, the difference calculated in feed in take results in a difference of 0.25 \u20ac per HD.\r\nThe surplus calculated over feed costs was\r\n13.74 \u20ac for each LSL layer and 12.91 \u20ac for\r\na single Dekalb layer. With these results,\r\nthe LSL flock is significantly superior to the\r\nDekalb flock.  <br><br>\r\n\r\n<strong>High egg numbers, low mortality and\r\nthe very good feed conversion ratio of\r\nLSL layers not only provide satisfaction for the farmer but they are economically interesting as well. Over\r\nthe total production period of one\r\nyear, these very good performances\r\nresult in a surplus over feed costs of\r\n0.83 \u20ac for LSL layers as compared to\r\nDekalb hens!<\/strong><br><br>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nDr. Wiebke Icken and<br>\r\nDr. Matthias Schmutz<br>\r\nGenetics\r\n\r\n\r\n<br><br><br>\r\n\r\nTable 1.
