For layer type breeds<\/H2>\r\n \r\n \r\n\r\n
Layer type breeds are being fed predominantly with mash feed \u2013 based on a worldwide\r\nview. One of the basic reasons will be the lowest cost in production – as mash feed – compared\r\nto others like pelleted, crumbled or expanded physical form.<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\nThere are some more reasons \u2013 from\r\nbirds\u2019 point of view \u2013 that mash feed\r\nwill be the best physical version of\r\ncompound feed for layer type breeds:<\/strong>

\r\n\r\n\u203a birds like to search within feed – mash\r\nfeed o\u001eers some opportunities

\r\n\u203a birds being kept busy – and won\u2019t be interested too much in their colleagues\r\nin terms of \u201cunwanted\u201d behavior, like\r\naggressive pecking or cannibalism

\r\n\u203a it\u2019s easy to incorporate real coarse limestone (source of calcium) – as most important tool for good egg shell quality

\r\n\u203a no impairment of feed supplements\r\nlike sensitive vitamins or enzymes

\r\n\u203a no changes from insoluble NSP into\r\nsoluble NSP \u2013 which cause an unstable\r\ndigestion and gut situation

\r\n\r\n\r\nFrom a technical point of view mash\r\nfeed production needs some basic\r\nrequest as there are:<\/strong>

\r\n\r\n\u203a suitable raw materials (no powdery\r\nones)

\r\n\u203a optimal grinding technique for raw materials \u2013 for instance roller mill grinding

\r\n\u203a technicians in the feed production\r\nneed to be trained on birds\u2019 view of\r\noptimal mash feed structure

\r\n\u203a the quality of mash feed must be\r\nchecked regularly with a sieve analysis\r\nequipment

\r\n\u203a everybody involved in the production\r\nneeds to accept, that homogeneity is\r\nthe overall target with as less as possible variation from one production lot\r\nto another \u2013 because birds don\u2019t like\r\nhuge changes

\r\n\u203a in order to support homogeneity and\r\nreduce segregation,\r\nmash feed should always have a minimum\r\nlevel of added oil or fat\r\nin the recipe

\r\n\r\n\r\nFinally it should be mentioned that\r\npelleted or crumbled feed for layer\r\ntype birds has some typical disadvantages:<\/strong>

\r\n \r\n\u203a it will never have real coarse limestone\r\ninside the pellets \/ crumbled particles

\r\n\u203a if pellets \/ crumbles break down, always real powdery \u001dnes show up,\r\nwhich birds absolutely don\u2019t like and\r\neven might refuse to eat at all

\r\n\u203a birds spend less time in eating activity and tend to develop \u201cunwanted\u201d\r\nbehavior

\r\n\u203a it occurs repeatedly all over the world,\r\nthat the single particles of a pelleted\r\nor crumbled feed are too hard and too\r\nsharp – with the consequence, that birds\r\nrefuse to eat those particles at all. This\r\ntopic is of very high relevance especially\r\nwith regard to starter feed for day old\r\nchicks and might be one reason for high\r\nmortality during brooding period.

\r\n\u203a pelleted \/ crumbled feed will be more\r\ncostly in production process at all\r\ntimes \u2013 compared to mash feed
