The brand new breeding farm in Canada includes 33,000\r\nsingle bird cages, 6,000 group cages and around 7,500 single units for pedigree males. In addition to the other pure line farms in Denmark and the\r\narea of Cuxhaven, our breeding program will be based on an even broader\r\nbasis to generate a lot of breeding progress also in the future.<\/blockquote>\r\n\r\n<br><br>\r\n\r\nA very comprehensive and precise laying\r\nperformance test has been established\r\nin single bird units, which di\u001eer from\r\neach other in the various countries. Daily data recording of each individual pedigree layer is one of\r\nthe secrets to our success. However, not only single bird units but also group cages in which members of the same family are housed, are among\r\nsome of the very important breeding tools. These\r\ngroup cages o\u001eer a selection tool to improve behaviour traits as e.g. plumage condition which is not\r\npossible in single units. Feather pecking and ranks\r\nin hierarchy can only be exercised in a group.\r\nFurther behaviour traits, e.g. nest acceptance are\r\ncaptured in a transponder-based group housing\r\nsystem. Testing with this system is also helpful for\r\ncomparing performances of full-sibs in commercial \u001boor housing and single bird units in order\r\nto be aware of potential genotype-environment\r\ninteractions. These very comprehensive performance tests of pure lines are rounded o\u001e by socalled \u201c\u001celd tests\u201d at commercial laying farms.<br><br>\r\nTherefore, cross-breeds are tested in di\u001eerent continents and in di\u001eerent climate zones. In addition\r\nto \u001celd tests in Germany and Spain, we have also\r\nhoused testing birds in Russia and Columbia.<br><br>\r\nAll together, the captured data is implemented in our data base system and combined with\r\nadditional information based on DNA analysis.\r\nSince DNA information is available, males can\r\nbe selected at an earlier age and it is possible to\r\ndi\u001eerentiate among full brothers, which was not\r\npossible in the past. The combination of traditional phenotypic performance testing and genome\r\nwide analysis is a promising tool for enhancing the\r\ngenetic progress for line combinations with a performance pro\u001cle tailored to speci\u001cc requirements.<br><br>\r\n According to this very broad-based performance testing of pure-line and cross-line hens,\r\n<strong>LOHMANN<\/strong> layers are very adaptable to varying\r\nhousing systems, climate conditions and consumer preferences. Consumer habits and preferences for speci\u001cc egg characteristics like shell colour\r\nand egg size also vary between countries and\r\neven between consumers within a single country. Japan, for example, has maintained one of the\r\nhighest levels of consumption with more than\r\n300 eggs per capita for decades now. The custom of breaking a raw egg over a bowl of rice for\r\nbreakfast helps to explain the focus on egg quality: white-shelled eggs with superior internal egg\r\nquality and guaranteed freedom from Salmonella.\r\nWhite eggs are also preferred in North and Central\r\nAmerica, the Middle East, India, Taiwan and the\r\nPhilippines, whereas brown eggs are preferred\r\nin most of Latin America, Europe and China. Tinted eggs, produced from crosses between White\r\nLeghorns and brown-egg breeds, are popular in\r\nJapan and China, but seldom seen in Europe.<br><br>\r\n For the foreseeable future, we can safely assume that general breeding goals such as egg\r\nnumber, feed e\u001dciency and egg quality traits will <br><br>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lohmann-breeders.com\/media\/2020\/08\/fot31.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"393\" class=\"imgcenter\" \/>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<br><br>\r\n\r\nremain priorities. Behaviour patterns and especially behaviour anomalies are likely to get more\r\nattention outside the Western world. Suitability\r\nfor \u001boor housing and free-range systems has become more important and this includes attention\r\nto a whole range of traits: acceptance of nests\r\nand free-range, persistent plumage cover to the\r\nend of lay, resistance to common diseases and\r\nminimal tendency to develop feather-pecking or\r\ncannibalism. National laws and regulations will re-\r\n\u001bect continuing attempts to de\u001cne priorities and\r\n\u201csustainability\u201d in terms of adequate nutrition for\r\nthe growing human population, protection of the\r\nenvironment and natural resources, ethical standards for animal farming, and \u2013 last but not least\r\n\u2013 economics. <br><br>\r\nTo supply the best possible combination for\r\neach market with speci\u001ced optimal egg weight\r\nand most common housing system, <strong>LOHMANN\r\nTIERZUCHT<\/strong> o\u001eers six di\u001eerent strain crosses, which\r\nare all selected with focus on e\u001dcient egg production, but with di\u001eerent emphasis on individual selection traits. Quite new on the list of commercially\r\navailable <strong>LOHMANN<\/strong> layers is the CONVERTER bird.\r\nLines of LSL and LB CONVERTER were selected on\r\nan outstanding feed conversion ratio for generations. Compared to the LSL and LB CLASSIC layer,\r\nthe CONVERTER lines lay around three eggs lesser\r\nand have a slightly lower egg weight. However,\r\nthey have their winning points in feed consumption, which is 5 to 7 g lesser per day as compared\r\nto LSL and LB CLASSIC. This results in an excellent\r\nfeed conversion ratio of less than 2 kg for one kilogram of eggs. In contrast to this very e\u001dcient\r\nlayer, <strong>LOHMANN TIERZUCHT<\/strong> is o\u001eering another\r\nnew bird to the market. LOHMANN DUAL is the\r\ncounterpart of LB CONVERTER.<strong>LOHMANN DUAL<\/strong>\r\nhas a much higher body weight and is one reaction to hinder the euthanisation of day-old male\r\nlayer hybrids. <strong>LOHMANN TIERZUCHT<\/strong> has therefore combined broiler and layer genetics to breed a\r\ndual-purpose chicken. The female lays around 250\r\neggs in an annual cycle length whereas the male\r\nis fattened up to 10 or 12 weeks of age, to supply a\r\nniche market with very tasty chicken meat.<br><br>\r\n Altogether, <strong>LOHMANN <\/strong>Genetics covers a big\r\nvariety of di\u001eerent requirements and speci\u001cc \u201cwishes\u201d that we\u2019ve only been able to achieve owing\r\nto our good positioning on the market and su\u001dcient testing capacities. It gives us great pride to announce the inauguration of our brand new pure\r\nline farm in Canada and also for our investments in\r\nthe expansion of our facilities in Cuxhaven.
