Inauguration of the brand new pedigree farm in YORK <\/h2>

\r\n\r\nFrom september 22nd – september 24th, LOHMANN\r\nTIERZUCHT<\/strong>\u2019s 52nd Franchise Distributor Meeting was held\r\nin York, Canada. The official opening of the brand new pedigree farm was the primary reason for the meeting. More than\r\n150 participants from all around the world took advantage of\r\nthis unique opportunity to have a glance into the daily breeding\r\nbusiness of LOHMANN TIERZUCHT<\/strong> and accepted the invitation to\r\nNorth America.

\r\nOn september 23rd, the event at the world-famous Niagara Falls\r\nbegan with a day of interesting presentations by renowned speakers who covered current topics related to the poultry industry.\r\nMr. Javier Ramirez, Managing Director of LOHMANN TIERZUCHT<\/strong>,\r\nopened the event and took the chance to speak proudly about\r\nthe developing success of the company. There are only 20 remaining countries on the world map where LOHMANN TIERZUCHT<\/strong>\r\nhas not entered the market, just yet. It is becoming very obvious\r\nthat there is no doubt in the outstanding quality of LOHMANN\r\nTIERZUCHT<\/strong>\u2019s layers. Clever marketing tactics can open up new opportunities for a successful business by the respective distributors.\r\nThe company is always ready to take on new challenges and\r\nis prepared to develop itself and its products further to adapt to\r\nnew situations in the market. This was emphasized in the interesting presentation held by Prof. Dr. Rudolf Preisinger, Managing Director and Chief Geneticist at LOHMANN TIERZUCHT<\/strong>. with its sophisticated breeding program, the company is able to improve on\r\nclassic traits like egg number, egg weight and livability to a very\r\nhigh level. These also include traits like beak shape, beak length\r\nand nesting behavior, all of which have gained importance in recent years. New breeding methods like genomic selection which\r\nhas already been well-integrated into the breeding programme at\r\nLOHMANN TIERZUCHT<\/strong> for two years now, enable the company to\r\nenjoy a much faster breeding progress than ever before.

\r\nThe presentation held by Mr. J\u00f8rgen Kjaer, scientist at Friedrich\r\nL\u00f6ffler Institute, gave an interesting overview on feather-pecking\r\nand cannibalism in layers. The scientist has been involved in investigations for a better understanding of the appearance of misbehavior in birds for many years now. He mentioned that through\r\ndifferent studies, it is now widely known that feather-pecking and\r\ncannibalism are caused by several factors. The focus of prevention\r\nshould therefore be placed on optimizing layer management. He\r\nalso mentioned that with a well-organized breeding program, it is\r\npossible to select birds with a weaker tendency towards featherpecking. After a series of investigations, he could conclude that\r\nhens with a higher drive to feather-pecking and cannibalism are\r\nmore active and show a higher content of stress hormones, e.g.\r\nCorticosterone, in the blood.

\r\n\r\n\r\n\"\"\r\n\r\n\r\nDr. Hans-Heinrich Thiele and Mr. Farhad Mozafar, both responsible\r\nfor Technical service at LOHMANN TIERZUCHT<\/strong>, held a lively debate\r\non the pros and cons of moulting in layers. Throughout the whole discussion, Dr. Thiele emphasized his opinion that moulting in\r\nmodern layer type hens does not make any sense. with an optimized management Lohmann hens show outstanding persistency which makes moulting unnecessary. with examples from the\r\nfield, he did some calculations showing that moulting does not\r\nnecessarily improve the economic situation of a layer operation.\r\nwith opposing views, Mr. Mozafar stated that it is widely known\r\nthat moulting can improve the egg shell stability at the end of the\r\nlaying cycle and that this improves the number of saleable eggs.\r\nBesides that, moulting reduces the number of male chicks which\r\nis, from an animal welfare point of view, a very valuable argument.\r\nThe discussion showed very clearly that there are no real pros and\r\ncons for or against moulting. It is always a question of the situation\r\nof every poultry operation and the market it is operating in.

\r\nThe \u201cChallenges of today\u2019s layer nutrition\u201d was the theme of\r\nMr. Robert Pottg\u00fcter\u2019s presentation, nutritionist at LOHMANN\r\nTIERZUCHT<\/strong>. Today, the high demands of soya in the nutrition of\r\nanimals is being more and more criticized as the cultivation of\r\nthe same, sometimes result in the deforestation of natural forests\r\nin the region of Central and south America. Moreover, in europe,\r\nthe use of soya in layer diets is controversial in terms of ongoing\r\nGMO discussions. In order to escape this dispute and to counter\r\nthe high soya prices, questions are constantly being posed about\r\nsoya-free and\/or soya reduced diets. In his presentation, the experienced nutritionist expressed that there are indeed alternatives to\r\nsoya in layer rations, e.g. rape and sunflower. It is, however, of great\r\nimportance to take the quality of these raw materials into account\r\nso as to avoid having a negative impact on the performance of\r\nthe birds. Investigations in practical trials have to be performed in\r\norder to determine to which extent soya can be excluded in layer\r\nfeed. If soya would be reduced, then the application of synthetic\r\namino acids in the feed is of main significance.

\r\n\u201cThe use of organic acids in the layer husbandry\u201d was the subject presented by selko Feed Additives\u2019 Mr. Christian Lienesch. It\r\nis becoming more and more important to reduce the application\r\nof medication in layer husbandry or better still, to do away with it\r\ncompletely. Applying organic acids in the feed or drinking water\r\ncan help to improve gut health in layers, thereby improving their\r\nresistibility towards pathogenic agents. Mr. Lienesch mentioned\r\nthat although there are many different acids that can be used, one\r\nhas to take into account that they each have a different effect on\r\nvarious pathogenic agents. some are useful against e.Coli and salmonella whereas others are effective in treating mold and yeast.\r\nIt is therefore necessary to investigate the situation at every farm\r\nvery closely before choosing a suitable acid.

The last presentation of Prof. Paul siegel, Virginia Tech University, covered the development of the poultry industry. In his lively\r\npresentation, he illustrated how humans managed to domesticate the original Red Jungle-fowl (Bankiva) to the modern laying\r\nhen. The experienced scientist stated that aside from the chickens\r\nthemselves, which are the base of a poultry breeding company, it\r\nis actually the people who are working within a company which\r\nare of great importance to guaranteeing the success of any breeding company.<\/blockquote>\r\n\r\n

\r\nOn wednesday, the 24th of september, the grand opening of\r\nthe pedigree farm was celebrated. with an official ribbon-cutting\r\nceremony, both managing directors, Prof. Dr. Rudolf Preisinger\r\nand Mr. Javier Ram\u00edrez, opened the doors of the farm for a wellorganized tour. Divided into groups, the visitors were allowed to\r\nexplore the farm by visiting different stations within the building.\r\nThis gave a very good overview about the quality of the building\r\nand familiarized the visitors with the breeding programme at\r\nLOHMANN TIERZUCHT<\/strong>. At eight different stations, each visitor was\r\ngiven a detailed explanation on how different traits are measured\r\nat farm level, i.e. before the values of the same are entered into a\r\ndatabase. This allows the geneticist to derive conclusions on the\r\nbreeding values of every chick. Demonstrations on how artificial\r\ninsemination is done in pure line hens were carried out at one\r\nstation. The visitors got an idea of how accurate the laying performance and the egg weight of each single hen are determined.\r\nMuch attention was drawn by the egg quality station. Here, there was a demonstration on how the breaking strength of eggs is\r\nrecorded. Not only is the \u201coutput\u201d of the hens (the eggs and their\r\nquality) of main interest for the respective geneticist, but also the\r\n\u201cinput\u201d is of crucial importance. Of course, it is relevant how much\r\nfeed the hens need to produce eggs; this is precisely recorded\r\nfor every hen in different phases of their lives. The results have an\r\ninfluence on the breeding value of every hen. The guided tour\r\nof the breeding farm and the well-organized explanations at the\r\ndifferent stations made the visitors aware of the complexity of\r\nLOHMANN TIERZUCHT<\/strong>\u2019s breeding program.

\r\nThe program was enhanced by diversified leisure activities. A\r\nboat trip going literally into the Niagara Falls and an excursion to a\r\nhistoric village of native Indians at \u201cCrawford Lake\u201d enabled the visitors to get in touch with the incredible nature of Canada and its\r\nnative culture. During a trip to the vineyard \u201cJackson Triggs\u201d, guests\r\ncould taste the quality of the regionally produced wines. The leisure program offered the perfect opportunity for visitors to interact\r\nwith each other and share valuable information and experiences\r\nin relation to their businesses.
