Quantitative traits<\/h2>\r\n\r\n

\r\nActivity<\/strong>
\r\nChicks of premium quality must be lively\r\nand have a good body tension. This can\r\nbe checked by placing a day-old chick on\r\nits back. A good chick does not struggle\r\nto get back directly on his feet. One can\r\nsay that it should not take more than 3\r\nseconds for the chick to get back in an\r\nupright position.

\r\nNavel<\/strong>
\r\nAn essential element in investigating chick quality is examining the quality of\r\nthe navel. A good navel\r\nis closed, dry and free of\r\negg shell and membrane\r\nresidues. The chick needs\r\nto be handled manually to\r\ncontrol the quality of its navel.\r\nOf course, it is not possible to check\r\nevery chick in a commercial hatchery prior to delivery.

\r\nInvestigation of beak and joints<\/strong>
\r\nInvestigating the conditions of the beak\r\nand joints of the chicks can give several hints on incubation conditions. Both\r\nmust have a normal appearance which\r\nmeans they have to be free of damages\r\nand wounds. wounded beaks and joints\r\nare hints of non-optimal conditions in the\r\nhatcher.

\r\n\r\nInvestigating chick activity<\/em>\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nRed dots on the beak indicate that the\r\ntemperature in the hatcher was too high.\r\neither the chicks wanted to break out of\r\nthe egg shell too fast and damaged their\r\nbeak by working too hard on the egg\r\nshell or they tried to regulate their body\r\ntemperature by breathing through the\r\nopenings of the hatch basket. By doing\r\nso, they damage the upper part of their\r\nbeaks. Injured joints can be in accordance\r\nto MAULDIN and BUHR (1996ww), signs\r\nfor a very high humidity level during incubation. Chicks which are hatched under\r\nthese high humidity conditions must put\r\nin more efforts to break out of the shell\r\nwhich harms their joints.

\r\nInvestigating belly Quality <\/strong>
\r\nThe belly of day old chicks must be soft\r\nand smooth. Bloated, stiff and hard bellies\r\nare signs of a badly absorbed yolk. This\r\noften leads to problems during brooding\r\nand results in a higher first week mortality\r\nrate. Causes for big and hard bellies in layer type chicks might be due to both insufficient water loss and too high temperatures during the incubation process. A hard\r\nbelly is also a sign for a yolk sack infection.

\r\nEvaluation of data<\/strong>
\r\nThe collection of data can be done by\r\nmeans of written forms and\/or can be directly entered into a computer programme. A good practice is to collect the data\r\nbased on breeder flock and hatch day.\r\nThis aids an overview on performance\r\nfluctuations related to breeder flocks\r\nand\/or to hatch day or even season of\r\nthe year. Of course, data collection only\r\nmakes sense if one is able and willing to\r\nsearch for the causes for obvious differences in chick quality. Only this can help to\r\nimprove the production process.

\r\nSummary <\/strong>
\r\nThe aim of every hatchery is to achieve\r\nthe highest possible number of premium\r\nquality chicks. To get an idea on the quality of produced and ready to sell chicks, it\r\nmakes sense to collect data of chick quality using clearly defined parameters. These\r\nparameters can be both quantitative and\r\nqualitative traits. Quantitative traits are namely chick weight, chick yield, chick- and\r\nfeather length. Qualitative traits are more\r\nsubjective and include the investigation\r\nof chick activity and the quality of the\r\nnavel, beak and joints. There are methods\r\nwhich can help to measure the qualitative\r\ntraits as objective as possible to achieve\r\na reliable overview about the produced\r\nchick quality.
