LsL is usually more negatively affected by long storage\r\nthan is <strong>LOHMANN BROWN.<\/strong><br><br>\r\nPre-Incubation is one tool to reduce the negative effect of long\r\negg storage. It cannot improve hatchability, but helps to maintain\r\nit. Therefore, it starts making sense using this technique, if eggs are\r\nscheduled for a storage period which leads to a noticeable decline\r\nin hatchability. This depends on the local conditions of the flock and\r\nthe storage. <br><br>\r\n\r\n\r\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lohmann-breeders.com\/media\/2020\/08\/pic24.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"633\" class=\"imgcenter\" \/>\r\n\r\n<em>Figure 1: Hatchability of stored LSL eggs under field condition (Japan)<\/em>\r\n\r\n<br><br>\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2>Why does pre-incubation work?\r\nlearning form mother hen \u2026<\/h2><br>\r\nA hen needs approximately 24 hours to produce an egg.\r\nAround 30 minutes after an egg is laid the next follicle is ovulated. The follicle falls into the infundibulum where the fertilisation\r\ntakes place. After that, the albumen is added, the egg membranes are formed and the egg shell is composed. <br><br>\r\nTherefore, the eggs arriving at the hatchery are containing\r\nan embryo representing already 23.5 hours development in the\r\nhen\u2019s body. However, this developmental stage at point of lay\r\nis not optimal for long storage. In nature it would be altered by\r\nperiodical warming of the eggs during the time the hen sits on\r\nthe nest to produce the next egg of the clutch. In the hatchery\r\nit is possible to achieve similar results by incubating the eggs for\r\n3 to 6 hours during the first storage days. This leads to further\r\ndevelopment of the germinal disk to a stage containing 60,000\r\n&#8211; 80,000 cells. At this stage the embryo is less susceptible to cell\r\ndeath occurring during the storage period. <br><br>\r\n\r\n\r\n<em><h2>How does Pre-Incubation work?\r\nThe procedure \u2026<\/h2><\/em><br>\r\n\r\n\r\nwe aim to apply 3 to 6 hours of incubation during the first\r\ndays of storage. These hours mean the time the eggs spend on\r\n100\u00b0 F\/37.8\u00b0 C incubation temperature. In order to bring the\r\neggs to this temperature, the eggs need to be heated-up and\r\nthey also need to cool down afterwards. The different steps of\r\nthe total Pre-Incubation procedure are shown by figure 2.\r\n<br><br>\r\n\r\n<em>Under conditions causing an improper cooling of the eggs the effect of pre-storage incubation might be negligible or even negative,\r\nbecause the eggs are already containing an embryo at an advanced stage of development. <\/em> <br><br>\r\n\r\n\r\n<em>Figure 2: Egg temperature during the Pre-Incubation steps<\/em> <br><br>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lohmann-breeders.com\/media\/2020\/08\/pic25.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"643\" class=\"imgcenter\" \/>\r\n\r\n<br><br>\r\n\r\n<strong>1. egg storage<\/strong><br>\r\nThe optimal day to pre-incubate the eggs depends on the pickup frequency and the transport conditions. while treating the eggs\r\nsoon after lay gives best results one should not forget to give hatching eggs a rest after long transport and\/or traying (to do the treatment eggs need to be placed on setter trays).\r\nHatcheries receiving eggs twice a week would usually treat the\r\neggs one or two days after egg reception. This means the egg age\r\nduring the treatment is 2-5 days. Also in hatcheries receiving the\r\neggs just one time per week, pre-incubation can be applied succesfully. <br><br>\r\n<strong>2. pre-warming<\/strong><br>\r\nwhile pre-warming of the eggs is not necessary when single-stage incubators are used for the treatment, it can facilitate the process.\r\nMany hatcheries use the pre-warming or delayed-start function of\r\nthe incubator to set the eggs at a time which suits the staff.\r\n<strong>3. Heat-up time + pre-incubation<\/strong><br>\r\nThe heat-up time depends on the heating capacity of the incubator and the number of eggs set. If it takes longer than 9 hours to\r\nheat-up the eggs the number of eggs should be reduced for the next\r\ntreatment. The shorter the heat-up time the longer is the recommended pre-incubation time, because the effective time for embryo development during the heating-up phase is shorter. Most hatcheries work\r\nsuccesfully with 3-4 hours on incubation temperature.\r\nHeat-up time plus pre-incubation time should not exceed 12\r\nhours.<br><br>\r\n<strong>4. Cool-down<\/strong><br>\r\nIdeally eggs are cooled down below 25\u00b0C before they are moved\r\nback in the egg room in order to avoid warming of remaining eggs\r\nin the storage room. This cooling can be done in the incubator or in\r\nthe setter room.<br><br>\r\n<strong>5. egg storage<\/strong><br>\r\nPre-incubation will do no harm to eggs which are set soon after\r\nthe treatment. If eggs are scheduled for more than 10 days storage\r\nafter the treatment it can be beneficial to do a second pre-incubation one week after the first one.\r\nIf pre-incubated eggs are going to be set, the necessary incubation time is shorter than normal. The usual incubation time can be\r\nreduced by approx. 6-8 hours (compared to figure 2: time of egg\r\ntemperature >32\u00b0C). <br>\r\n\r\nRule of thumb: If a hatchery treats all eggs scheduled for long\r\negg storage, it can use the same setting time for all eggs!
