The\r\nwish is understandable; with the impressive economic development on the continent and the high increase of\r\npopulation it seems to be a profitable move. <\/blockquote><br><br>\r\n\r\n\r\nThere are success stories, but also\r\nmany failures. Taking a closer look\r\nat the markets and specific situation of the different countries pays off. east\r\nAfrica for example has a surplus of eggs\r\nproduced locally, while west Africa shows\r\na deficit of 6000 t shell eggs on a yearly\r\naverage production and North Africa even\r\nmore with 8000 t per year. The egg markets on the continent are mostly unpredictable and professional farmers have to\r\ncompete with the production of backyard\r\nchicken. Most eggs in Africa are purchased\r\nfor direct consumption without a food\r\nprocessing industry serving as a puffer.\r\negg producers are facing fluctuations on\r\nsales due to religious reasons such as the\r\northodox fasting periods in ethiopia and\r\nRamadan in Muslim countries or simply\r\nan overproduction because of too many\r\nplayers in the market. Producers of broiler\r\nmeat face tough competition of cheap\r\nimported frozen meat from europe as well\r\nas Brazil which has nearly killed the broiler\r\nindustry in Ghana. Feed mill owners have a\r\nhard time convincing the local farmers to\r\naccept higher prices for better feed quality\r\nand quit mixing their own feed.<br><br>\r\n\r\n\r\n<H2>Beach life<\/H2>\r\nMany potential future poultry farmers\r\nasked me which country I would see\r\nas most lucrative to invest in and I unfortunately have bad news for the ones\r\nwhich hoped to combine business and\r\nbeach life. I believe the most interesting\r\nmarkets in the future are Congo, sudan\r\nand ethiopia apart from Nigeria, of course,\r\nwhich is already a booming market.\r\nForeign investors often have to undergo\r\nan administrative marathon in order to secure all the licenses, tax numbers and business permits which can take\r\nup to a year depending\r\non the country. The\r\nprocess will\r\nbe faster\r\nand much cheaper with a local partner, but\r\nI have seen a number of these apparently\r\ntrustworthy and reliable gentlemen making\r\na mockery of the business, leaving a disillusioned penniless foreign investor behind\r\nwith few chances of getting his money back.\r\nCourt cases can take years in most African\r\ncountries and the outcome is uncertain, but\r\nthat may be the case for many court cases\r\nno matter where in the world. Don\u2019t get me\r\nwrong, there are honest potential business\r\npartners out there, but the selection has to\r\nbe extremely thorough. <br><br>\r\n\r\n<H2>Land<\/H2>\r\nLand issue is a big problem in most African\r\ncountries, either because it is not available\r\nor because the issue of ownership is not\r\nsolved. I know peoplewho had to buy their property a few times\r\nbecause the title deed of their land was disputed after each purchase due to suddenly\r\nappearing uncles, brothers or former business partners holding legal documents.<br><br>\r\n\r\nPossession of land is a sensitive topic\r\nin Africa and in many countries a company\r\ncannot buy the land but lease it for a certain amount of time. A private foreign person cannot buy land in most cases, Tanzania for example, he can only buy land if he\r\nholds a citizenship.<br><br>\r\nBe sure to budget enough funds for\r\nelectricity since power supply is an issue\r\nthroughout Africa. A whole week in Tanzania can pass without power and even\r\nsouth Africa is now facing \u2018load shadings\u2019\r\nwhich leaves alternating parts of the city\r\ncut off the electricity for 2 to 3 hours several times during the week.<br><br>\r\n\r\n<H2>Raw materials<\/H2>\r\nRaw materials such as maize and soya are\r\nnot available throughout the year and\r\nhave to be imported or are of low quality and the feed mills are competing with\r\nhuman consumption. In landlocked countries the price for raw materials are normally significantly higher than in countries\r\nwith access to the sea.
