LOHMANN TIERZUCHT<\/strong> has proven to be a successful key player in the poultry industry for many decades. To ensure the continuation of the success story of LOHMANN Layers it is of paramount importance to secure existing distribution channels and to create new gateways to the world. <\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\nToday\u2019s challenges are different\r\nfrom the time when LOHMANN\r\nTIERZUCHT<\/strong> started layer breeding 1959 in Cuxhaven, Germany, focusing on europe and North Africa only. \u201cIn\r\nthe meantime, we have a global presence\r\ncovering over 120 countries on all continents, with the exception of Antarctica\u201d,\r\nstates Director Business Development Michael seidel. \u201cLOHMANN TIeRZUCHT has\r\nbecome the global leader in the production of parent stocks and laying hens in the\r\nlast five decades.\u201d The Head Office is still at\r\nthe same location in Cuxhaven. As are the\r\ntwo hatcheries Dorum and Altenwalde\r\nand the original breeder farms, of course.

\r\n

New challenges<\/H2>
\r\nHowever, times have changed and the\r\nentire poultry industry is facing new challenges and threats. The most severe is the\r\nlatent presence of Avian Influenza in the\r\nwild bird population. Outbreaks of LPAI or\r\neven HPAI are possible in most countries\r\nat any time and the risks are highest during the migration period of the wild birds.\r\nOutbreaks do not only have an enormous\r\nimpact on the farm struck by the disease\r\nbut they also affect the entire country to a\r\ncertain extent. In any case, transportation\r\nand trade are affected and disturbed. This\r\nperiod may vary from three months up to\r\nthree years from the date of cleaning and\r\ndisinfection, leading to interruption of\r\nshipments and production cycles. Director\r\nof Global Reproduction Tobias Baumgarten: \u201cTo avoid this, LOHMANN TIERZUCHT<\/strong> is\r\nwell-represented in all key regions around\r\nthe world having its own production sites\r\nfor pure lines and grandparent stocks in\r\ncountries such as Germany, Denmark, Brazil, Canada and the USA.\u201d

\r\n

Production areas<\/H2>
\r\nTo ensure production and breeding in\r\nCanada, LOHMANN TIERZUCHT<\/strong> started\r\nbuilding new breeding farms in 2013. Location and layout of the breeding farms\r\nwere selected to meet a very high biosecurity standard. eggs from the new production sites can be exported to Germany\r\nor hatched in the LOHMANN TIERZUCHT<\/strong>\r\nhatchery in Canada. \u201cThis allows us to be\r\nmore flexible and provides us with more\r\ngenetic backup in times of export restrictions in one of the production areas\u201d, explains Baumgarten. \u201cwith the increase of\r\nproduction Canada will be a possible supplier of chicks to LOHMANN customers.\r\nIn 2014 spain was added as an additional\r\nLOHMANN <\/strong>grandparent production site.\r\nThe spanish production farms are jointly managed by LOHMANN<\/strong> and our long\r\nterm partner Ibertec. This ensures high\r\nchick quality and vast experience in the industry.\u201d This new production area offers all\r\nproducts and might be an option for countries to which LOHMANN<\/strong> could not deliver\r\nbefore. Another advantage of the new\r\nproduction site is that it is situated closer\r\nto North Africa, an important and growing\r\nregion for the future. The time needed for\r\ntransportation from spain is much less and\r\nthe day-old chicks are closer to customers\r\nin Africa than the ones from Canada and\r\nGerman hatcheries.

\r\nHowever, availability of production\r\nalone does not automatically allow export\r\nshipments. Health certificates have to be\r\nin place. If the supplying LOHMANN <\/strong>hatchery and the receiving LOHMANN<\/strong> customer is within the european Union, this is\r\neasily achieved because of the common\r\nmarket and binding eU directives for all\r\n28 member states. The eU follows the OIe\r\n(world Organisation for Animal Health)\r\nregulations with regards to management\r\nand handling of poultry movements in\r\ncase of an outbreak of Avian Influenza.

\r\n

Regionalisation<\/H2>
\r\nThe so called \u2018regionalisation\u2019 is an important tool to ensure continuation of supplies and normal business unless the immediate region of the hatchery or farm is\r\naffected. Regionalisation is a methodology\r\nfor disease control through the separation\r\nof disease free and affected areas on the\r\nbasis of epidemiological criteria. exports to and from non-eU countries are more\r\ncomplex, especially if regionalisation is not\r\napplied and valid health certificates are\r\nrequired. In some cases inspections of the\r\nsupplier farms and hatchery are necessary\r\nas a base for negotiations for an agreed\r\nhealth certificate.

\r\n

Fact finding visit hatching eggs and\r\nday-old chicks<\/H2>
\r\nAn official delegation from Bolivia visited\r\nGermany for one week with four high\r\nranking officials, Ing. Mauricio Ordo\u00f1ez\r\nCastillo, Chief executive Officer seNAsAG,\r\nDr. Javier ernesto su\u00e1rez Hurtado, Director\r\nstate Veterinary service of seNAsAG, Dr.\r\nHernan Oliver Daza Gutierrez, state Commissioner for epidemiology and Dr. Ornar\r\nBenavides C\u00e9spedes, Officer for the state\r\nPoultry Health Programme. The inspection was organised by LOHMANN TIERZUCHT<\/strong> in cooperation with the German\r\nPoultry Association.

\r\nThe purpose was a fact finding visit\r\nconcerning hatching eggs and day-old\r\nchicks to the Friedrich Loeffler Institute\r\nand other competent veterinary authorities to become acquainted with the\r\nGerman veterinary system and disease\r\nprevention. \u201cOur goal was to create confidence with the officials to pave the way\r\nfor German poultry being imported into\r\nBolivia\u201d, says Michael seidel.

\r\n

Friedrich loeffler institute<\/H2>
\r\nThe tour started at the Federal Research Institute for Animal Health, named Friedrich\r\nLoeffler Institute (FLI) having its headquarters on the Isle of Riems. Dr. J. schell presented the work of the FLI, which focusses on\r\nboth farm animal health and welfare and\r\non the protection of humans from zoonosis.\r\nMain topic of the visit was Avian Influenza.
\r\nProf. Harder and Prof. Grund introduced the FLI as the international reference\r\nlaboratory of the OIe for Avian Influenza. This was followed by an update of Dr.\r\nHomeier on H5N8 outbreaks in Germany\r\nand europe. \u201cThe most important message\r\nwas the fact that all Avian Influenza outbreaks in Germany were regionally isolated cases and no cross contamination took\r\nplace\u201d, seidel shares.
\r\nThe second day, LOHMANN TIERZUCHT<\/strong> was the major focus. seidel: \u201cwe\r\nvisited our Head Office in Cuxhaven and\r\npaid a visit to the District Veterinary Office\r\nof Cuxhaven. Biosecurity and -protection\r\nwere the main topics of the presentations\r\nand discussions. It goes without saying\r\nthat LOHMANN TIERZUCHT<\/strong> as a primary\r\nbreeding company has the highest possible standards.\u201d

\r\n

Veterinary system<\/H2>
\r\nDay three of the inspection brought us\r\nto GeseVO GmbH (Association of Disease\r\nPrevention) in Cloppenburg. The company\r\nis owned by various animal farmer associations. It is financed through the Animal\r\nDisease Funds of the states of Lower saxony and Mecklenburg western Pomerania.\r\nThe purpose is to organise the combat\r\nof outbreaks of notifiable animal diseases\r\nas quickly and efficiently as possible. This\r\nis done through the killing and disposal\r\nof affected flocks in accordance with the\r\nGerman Animal welfare Act to prevent\r\nthe disease from spreading. The company,\r\nwhich was founded in 2008, is able to be\r\nready to leave fully equipped with trucks,\r\ncleaning and disinfection material within\r\nsix hours after being alarmed.

\r\nThe Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture in Germany\u2019s capital city Berlin\r\nfollowed. Dr. Axel stockmann, head of\r\nDivision 334, responsible for veterinary\r\naffairs relating to export trade and international animal health policy welcomed\r\nthe delegation jointly with Dr. A. Jackst\r\ngiving introductory remarks on the German veterinary system. Lastly, Dr. Anette\r\nJackst requested to consider an agreed\r\nhealth certificate between Germany and\r\nBolivia based on regionalisation on district\r\nlevel. \u201cThis was conditionally agreed upon\r\nand might lead to new supply possibilities\r\nfrom Germany\u201d, says seidel. \u201cBefore flying\r\nback home, we visited the Lufthansa Animal Lounge at Frankfurt International Airport together with the Hessian Veterinary\r\nBoarder Control station.\u201d

\r\n\r\n\r\n

Vietnamese Expert delegation<\/H2>
\r\nA similar visiting programme was done in\r\nNovember 2013 by a Vietnamese expert\r\ndelegation of the Ministry of Agriculture\r\nand Rural Development. As a result of the\r\nvisit, as of February 18th 2014, a \u2018veterinary certificate for the exportation of day-old\r\nchicks from the Federal Republic of Germany to the socialist Republic of Vietnam\u2018 was\r\nagreed where the reference is directly to\r\nthe breeding establishment and hatcheries.

\r\nAs a result, the trade barriers have decreased due to the trust in the German\r\nVeterinary system and disease prevention,\r\neven in case of an outbreak of Avian Influenza. The next logical step to broaden\r\nthe trade relation of both countries was\r\nthe one-week visit of a group of experts\r\nin June this year, led by the Vice Chairman\r\nof Vietnamese Veterinary Association, Dr.\r\nTran Dinh Tu and Dr. Mai Van Hiep, Deputy Director General Department of Animal\r\nHealth, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural\r\nDevelopment. Purpose of the visit was to\r\nestablish a closer cooperation between\r\nthe veterinary authorities and commercial\r\nestablishments of both countries. On the\r\nagenda were visits of layer, broiler and egg\r\nproduction companies as well as an opening conference at the Ministry of Food\r\nand Agriculture in Berlin. During that meeting Vice Minister Peter Bleser welcomed\r\nthe group.

\r\n\u201cInitiated by LOHMANN TIERZUCHT<\/strong>\r\nthrough the German Poultry Association\r\nand supported by the German Federal\r\nMinistry of Food and Agriculture\u201d, seidel\r\nconcludes, \u201cthese programmes confirmed\r\nthat trust and confidence is an important\r\nprerequisite to establish or ease trade and\r\ndistribution channels for poultry and hatching eggs between Germany and countries worldwide.\u201d
