The participants were treated to three interesting days filled with updates on\r\ncurrent topics in the layer industry as well as discussions and lively exchange of experiences<\/blockquote>\r\n\r\n<br><br>\r\n\r\nTo kick-off the lecture programme,\r\na variety of presentations were\r\nheld on the first day. We were introduced to the Turkish Layer business by\r\n\u201cHasTavuk\u201d and learnt more about the problems the host country is currently facing.\r\nTurkey is very keen in acquiring market\r\nshares in other countries such as Japan and China in order to not be entirely dependent on the European\r\nmarket for their exports.<br><br>\r\nProf. Dr. Preisinger gave an update on \u2018What\u2019s new in Genetics?\u2019\r\nthereby emphasizing that \u2018Selection\r\nmust not focus on current market\r\nand customer needs alone, but rather\r\non global market needs of the future.\u2019 <br><br>\r\nBy 2050, the world\u2019s population is\r\nexpected to increase to about 9 billion\r\nand urbanization will increase from 50%\r\nto 70%. Andr\u00e9 Brand of \u201cNutreco\u2019s Trouw\r\nNutrition\u201d began his presentation by describing potential problems. He then presented innovative solutions to tackle the\r\nsame, e.g. precision feeding.<br><br>\r\nCustomers from other parts of the\r\nworld such as \u201cBoire &#038; Freres\u201d of Canada, \u201cSchropper\u201d of Austria, \u201cBounty Fresh\u201d\r\nof the Philippines, \u201cIncubandina S.A.\u201d of\r\nEcuador and \u201cWadi Poultry\u201d of Egypt,\r\nalso had the opportunity to present their\r\ncompanies and to show the differences of\r\negg production in their respective regions.<br><br>\r\nPeter van Horne, \u201cLEI Wageningen\u201d,\r\ntook to the podium and held a speech\r\non \u201cAvian Influenza: economic impact on\r\nthe layer industry\u201d. He pointed at strong\r\nevidence that suggest that the virus is\r\nintroduced by wild birds. Van Horne then\r\nwent through the economic impact the\r\noutbreaks have on trade and egg prices in\r\nEurope as well as in the US.\r\nOn the last day, the attendees took\r\npart in a brand new concept of the\r\nlecture programme, i.e. interactive\r\nworkshops covering the three\r\nmajor topics in today\u2019s operations: Hatchery, Economics and\r\nHealth.
