Custom designed hatchery in Rochester <\/h2>\r\nA company press statement released on\r\nMay 8 announced production had commenced at a custom designed hatchery in\r\nRochester, Victoria.\r\nThis hatchery is the culmination of\r\nmore than five years of sourcing, design and\r\nconstruction work and will provide Australian egg farmers with a secure supply of high\r\nquality livestock for decades to come.\r\nRichard Rayner, CEO of SBA, explained \u201cWe\r\nhave been able to take advantage of recent\r\nadvancements in single stage incubation\r\ntechnology and a new process known as\r\nSPIDES (Short Periods of Incubation During\r\nEgg Storage). These improvements result\r\nin more consistent, better quality hatches\r\nwhich means a dependable supply of high\r\nquality chicks for our customers.

The new hatchery has been designed with an eye\r\nto the future, allowing for rapid capacity\r\nexpansion into the existing structure and\r\nsite planning permission in place to double\r\ncapacity through further development.\u201d

<\/blockquote>\r\n\r\n\r\n\t\r\n\u201cThe $19 million project has been completed using Petersime Incubators and Ecat\r\nautomation from Belgium and France respectively and contractors from around regional Victoria.\r\n\u201cDesigning a new hatchery from the\r\nground up has given SBA the ability to\r\ncreate a state of the art facility with world\r\nclass bio-security, including an off-site truck\r\nand chick basket wash, alongside the best\r\navailable chick processing technology to\r\nensure efficient processing at the highest\r\npossible welfare standards,\u201d Mr Rayner said.

\u201cWelcome to the world\u2019s newest\r\nhatchery,\u201d<\/h2>\r\nThe new hatchery will be staffed by a\r\nmixture of workers transferring from SBA\u2019s\r\nexisting hatchery and residents of the Rochester district.

\r\n\u201cWelcome to the world\u2019s\r\nnewest hatchery,\u201d said Mr Rayner, when\r\nwelcoming guests to the new Rochester\r\nfacility on March 30. \u201cWe thought that this\r\nwould be a good opportunity to show you\r\naround before we go into biosecurity lock\r\ndown.

\r\n\u201cThe facility features the latest and\r\nmost advanced hatchery design and technology and the company is both ISO and\r\nHACCP accredited.\r\n\u201cApart from being the leading supplier of\r\nlayer genetics with the world\u2019s best two layer breeds, SBA supply Seqirus (formerly CSL)\r\nwith hatching eggs for human flu vaccine\r\nmanufacture. \u201cOur market share of layer genetics rose to 65% in 2016 and is projected\r\nto continue increasing\u201d he said. \u201cThere is the\r\nquestion of our responsibility as a critical\r\nsupplier to the layer industry where biosecurity, supply continuity and redundancy\r\nare our paramount concerns.\u201d
\r\n\r\n

Biosecurity and key risks <\/h2>\r\nIn defining differences between existing\r\nhatchery infrastructure and the new Rochester facility, Mr Rayner identified key\r\nrisks as being the hatchery and production\r\nsite on the same location and trucks and\r\nchick baskets returning to the hatchery. The\r\nnew direction for SBA, to reduce risk and increase security, involves a new hatchery and\r\nfour parent stock farms with a significant\r\nbiosecurity buffer between each operation.

\r\n\u201cA remote truck wash and delivery basket sanitation depot and three new chick\r\ndelivery trucks with state of the art Van\r\nRavenhorst bodies with increased systems\r\nback up capability.\u201d

These trucks have two\r\ngenerators to ensure that a stable temperature can be maintained for the chicks at all\r\ntimes. The trucks cover some of the greatest\r\ndistances on the planet and operate in temperatures from cool temperate in the south\r\nto tropical conditions up north.
\r\n\r\n

Research for design and equipment<\/h2>\r\n\u201cThere have been years of research devoted\r\nto selecting the best design and equipment\r\nfor our new hatchery with the key aims of\r\nimproving chick quality, hygiene levels and\r\nhaving the ability for future expansion. \u201cWe\r\nexperienced 12 months of delays due to\r\nobjections and VCAT interventions,\u201d Mr Rayner explained. \u201cThe design parameters were\r\nto employ the best available incubation\r\nand automation technology and achieve\r\nthe best process flow and building hygiene.\r\n\u201cWe wanted to use the best possible\r\nheating, ventilation and air conditioning\r\n(HVAC) for optimum conditions and airflow\r\ndirection. Water sanitation is also of critical\r\nimportance.

\r\n\r\n\u201cSBA partnered with Petersime for a\r\nnumber of reasons including the fact that\r\nthey were technologically advanced, offered good back up and support in Australia,\r\nare easy to clean and energy efficient.\r\n\u201cMost of all however, is that we believe their\r\nproduct will produce the best quality chicks.
\r\n\r\n

New Systems <\/h2>\r\n\u201cThe single stage design feature of the\r\nPetersime equipment is superior to multi\r\nstage incubation, offers better single batch\r\ncontrol with a tighter hatch spread delivering better hatchability, better chick quality\r\nand better liveability.\u201d

\r\nMr Rayner went on to explain the \u201cshort\r\nperiods of incubation during egg storage\r\n(SPIDES) delivered a more even start to incubation, better hatchability, better chick\r\nuniformity and required less donor flocks\r\nper placement\u201d.

\r\nECAT Automation is a French based\r\ncompany producing hatchery handling\r\nsystems for small, medium and large scale\r\noperations. \u201cOur new ECAT systems mean\r\nless manual handling of eggs leading to\r\nbetter hatchability and improved chick quality,\u201d Mr Rayner explained. \u201cThe systems consist of auto trolley, tray and basket washing,\r\ndrying and sanitising to improve hygiene levels. \u201cEfficient and accurate chick handling\r\nwhich includes technologically advanced\r\nchick counters delivers accurate chick numbers per box delivered to our customers. \u201cIn\r\na modern and hygienic hatchery, ventilation and air flow is of critical importance. \u201cIn\r\nour clean to dirty airflow strategy we have\r\nthe highest (+ve) pressure in cleanest areas\r\nand lowest in dirtiest areas.
\r\n\r\n

Maximum possible building hygiene <\/h2>\r\n\u201cAchieving maximum possible building hygiene, involved detailed design planning\r\nand some major investment.\r\n\u201cFloors are not bare concrete which can\r\ndegrade but epoxy sealed.\r\n\u201cAll drains and automation equipment\r\nare fabricated in stainless steel. There is movement sensitive lighting (no manual switches) and no conduits or power points on\r\nwall surfaces and finally there is a ring main\r\nsanitation system,\u201d Mr Rayner said.

\r\n\u201cThe new facility will have a capacity of\r\n14 million chicks a year and the design allows for extra incubators within the existing\r\nbuilding in order to double that capacity as\r\nmarket demand grows. \u201cPlanning approval\r\nis in place to extend the building when\r\nrequired in order to increase capacity and\r\nwe can move to four day hatching and use\r\nthe same processing areas and equipment.
\r\n\u201cNew farm sites will also contribute to our\r\nability to double current capacity.\r\n\u201cSo we have a new hatchery, new farms,\r\nnew trucks and a dedicated truck and chick\r\nbasket sanitising depot.\r\n\u201cAll this will improve our quality, biosecurity and capacity to supply a growing industry,\u201d Mr Rayner concluded.\r\nWith the friendly assistance of Peter\r\nBedwell, Poultry Digest and SBA Australia.
