The\r\nLaboratory employs highly qualified, specialist\r\npoultry veterinarians, who ensure that\r\nappropriate, practical measures are taken in\r\na timely manner following careful diagnosis.<br><br>\r\nThe team at the Cuxhaven location\r\ncomprises laboratory technicians, 3 specialist\r\npoultry veterinarians and a biologist.\r\nThe Animal Health, Veterinary and Hygiene\r\n&#038; Diagnostics services provided by the\r\nVeterinary Laboratory are available to all\r\nnational and international LOHMANN customers.<br><br>\r\n\r\n<strong>Examples include:<\/strong><br><br>\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"milista\"><li>Recommendations of vaccination programmes\r\nfor LOHMANN customers<\/li>\r\n<li>Development of vaccination programmes\r\nfor LOHMANN flocks<\/li>\r\n<li>Consultancy services as part of technical\r\nservices for international customers<\/li>\r\n<li>Hygiene monitoring<\/li>\r\n<li>Infection status analyses of farms<\/li>\r\n<li>Proof of efficacy of cleaning and disinfection\r\nmeasures<\/li>\r\n<li>Assurance of optimum husbandry and\r\nproduction conditions<\/li><\/ul><br>\r\nThe Veterinary Laboratory is state-accredited\r\nunder ISO\/IEC 17025:2005. This ensures\r\ncompliance with the most stringent quality\r\nstandards and technical competence\r\nin performing all diagnostic investigations.<br><br>\r\n\r\n<strong>Comprehensive diagnostics<\/strong><br><br>\r\n\r\nThe Veterinary Laboratory provides a wide\r\nrange of diagnostic solutions from different\r\nareas. Samples are received from customers\r\nall over the world.<br><br>\r\n\r\n<strong>Bacteriology<\/strong><br><br>\r\n\r\nThe detection and typing of salmonella is a\r\ncore objective of bacteriological investigations\r\nas part of zoonosis control programmes.\r\nComprehensive further investigation\r\nmethods are required for state-of-the-art\r\nhygiene monitoring.<br><br>\r\n\r\nClassic pathogen isolation is used where\r\nthe pathogens affecting diseased flocks\r\nneed to be precisely identified and resistance\r\nprofiles developed for antimicrobial therapy.\r\nAdditional serological or molecular biological\r\nmethods allow the various strains to be\r\naccurately differentiated and thus support\r\nepidemiological information that may be important\r\nin using the relevant pathogens for\r\nthe production of flock-specific vaccines.<br><br>\r\n\r\n<strong>Serology<\/strong><br><br>\r\n\r\nSerological investigations are conducted\r\nboth to detect antibodies for identifying\r\ninfections in flocks and to verify the\r\nefficiency of vaccination programmes.\r\nOptimised serological test methods are\r\nused in keeping with the given pathogen\r\ntype and question at hand.<br> \r\nMethods such\r\n\r\n\r\n<blockquote>as rapid serum agglutination (RSA), the\r\nagar gel precipitation test (AGP) and ELISA\r\n(enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay)\r\nare employed to detect antibodies against\r\ncertain types of pathogens.<br><br><\/blockquote>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nHaemagglutination inhibition tests\r\n(HAI) and virus neutralisation tests (VNT)\r\nadditionally allow antibodies against various\r\npathogen serotypes or subtypes (for example infectious bronchitis or avian\r\ninfluenza) to be differentiated. The use of\r\nimmunofluorescence assists in clarifying\r\nother types of specialised questions.<br><br>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lohmann-breeders.com\/media\/2020\/07\/doctors.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"80%\" class=\"imgcenter\" \/>\r\n<br><br>\r\n\r\n<strong>Virology<\/strong><br><br>\r\n\r\nWhile molecular biological methods cover\r\na wide range of issues arising in virological\r\ndiagnostics, they cannot replace classic\r\nmethods of virus isolation in embryonated\r\nchicken eggs or cell culture systems.<br><br>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<blockquote>The Veterinary Laboratory of LOHMANN\r\nTIERZUCHT continues to provide these\r\nmethods, which form the basis for isolating\r\nviruses for producing flock-specific\r\nvaccines against avian reoviruses or adenoviruses\r\nor the infectious bronchitis virus,\r\namong others.<\/blockquote>\r\n\r\n<br><br>\r\n\r\n<strong>Molecular biology<\/strong><br><br>\r\n\r\nMolecular biological methods such as\r\nPCR (polymerase chain reaction) form an\r\nessential part of veterinary diagnostics,\r\nabove all for poultry. Modern real-time\r\nPCR, for example, ensures that the potential\r\ninvolvement of avian influenza viruses\r\nin acute disease events can be clarified\r\nwithin a matter of hours, and the method\r\nhas thus become an indispensable part of\r\ndisease control.<br>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<blockquote>While the detection of antibodies\r\ncan only provide retrospective information\r\non disease events in flocks, PCR\r\nallows the current health status in flocks to\r\nbe determined, for example with regard to\r\nmycoplasmas.<br> <\/blockquote>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nPCR as well as subsequent\r\nsequencing, if required, additionally facilitate\r\nthe speedy identification of infectious\r\nbronchitis virus strains or the determination\r\nof virulence factors in E. coli strains.<br><br>\r\n\r\n<strong>Sampling<\/strong><br><br>\r\n\r\ncan be performed using a variety of carriers\r\nand media, which the laboratory is\r\nable to recommend to customers on an\r\nindividual basis.<br><br>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lohmann-breeders.com\/media\/2020\/07\/VETERINARY-LABORATORY-bottom.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"80%\" class=\"imgcenter\" \/>\r\n<br><br>\r\n\r\n<strong>Research &#038; Development<\/strong><br><br>\r\n\r\nThe Veterinary Laboratory has conducted\r\nresearch and development projects on\r\nidentifying and controlling new poultry\r\ndiseases for many years.
