LOHMANN TIERZUCHT continues to invest in the infrastructure of the breeding programme. Following\r\nthe construction of a new, state of the art breeding farm in Canada in 2013 and 2014 and the complete\r\nrenovation of a former parentstock farm of Spanish distributor IBERTEC into a breeding farm, the next\r\nstep for expansion was the development of a new location in Scotland.<\/blockquote>\r\n\r\nNew location in Scotland<\/strong>

\r\n\r\nA plot of land was purchased two years\r\nago (shortly before the Brexit referendum)\r\nnot far from the city of Perth, about one\r\nhour by car north of Edinburgh. The site\r\nwas earmarked for the construction of a\r\nnew breeding farm from scratch.
The capacity\r\nis approximately 26,000 females and\r\n5,000 males. The first birds were housed in\r\nMay 2018 and a new team successfully\r\nstarted genetic registration work. With the\r\nexpansion of the pure line testing capacity,\r\nhigher selection intensity and greater accuracy\r\nin the selection decisions based on\r\ngenomic information, the rate of genetic\r\ngain is expected to further increase.

\r\n\r\nSafeguarding future genetic progress<\/strong>

\r\n\r\nThis huge investment in the growth of the\r\nbreeding programme and expansion of\r\nthe testing capacity is a big step towards\r\nsafeguarding the future developments of\r\ngenetic progress. The increased economic\r\nmerit in the pure line population will be\r\ntransferred down the breeding pyramid\r\nto grandparents, parents and commercial\r\nlaying hens.
Of course, the breeding goals\r\nneed to be defined as closely as possible\r\nto the needs of commercial egg producers.\r\nFor this reason, the LOHMANN team\r\nmaintains very close contact with customers\r\nto observe market needs and identify\r\nfields for further improvement of our birds.\r\nDue to this close collaboration, LOHMANN\r\nlayers continue to gain a market share in\r\nmany countries around the globe.

\r\n\r\nSelection priorities<\/strong>

\r\n\r\n
    \r\n
  • Persistency:<\/strong> the persistency of lay is\r\nthe economically most important trait.\r\nThe productive life of the flocks has increased\r\nin the past ten years by approximately\r\nfive weeks, this means one more\r\nweek of age every two years before\r\nflocks go to slaughter.<\/li>\r\n
  • Shell strength:<\/strong> this longer life of the\r\nflocks can only be achieved if the eggs\r\nproduced at an older age are still suitable\r\nfor grading, without too many\r\ncracked\/broken eggs.<\/li>\r\n
  • No later start of lay:<\/strong> maintain and\r\nslightly increase the sexual maturity<\/li>\r\n
  • Livability<\/strong><\/li>\r\n
  • Nesting behaviour<\/strong><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>
    \r\n\r\nNew equipment for floor testing<\/strong>

    \r\nIn cooperation with \u201cBig Dutchman\u201d, a new\r\nversion of the Weihenstephan funnel nest\r\nbox was developed. After 10 years of experience\r\nwith the proven layout, the status of\r\nthe technological component was brought\r\nup-to-date. An additional house at a breeding\r\nfarm in the Cuxhaven region was\r\nequipped with this revised version, and the\r\nfirst results are available for the selection.

    \r\n\r\nBig is beautiful – update on body\r\nweight recommendations in rearing\r\nof LOHMANN commercial layers<\/strong>

    \r\n\r\nThe LOHMANN body weight standards\r\nfor the rearing period of commercial hens\r\nhave remained unchanged for a very long\r\ntime. Other than the performance standards\r\nfor the laying performance, there is\r\nno genetic progress in the body weight\r\nthat needs to be adjusted in an updated\r\nstandard.
    However, the management recommendations\r\nin the guides need to be\r\nperiodically reviewed to ensure they are\r\nstill current in a changing environment.

    \r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
    Body weight growth during rearing\r\nis a process that must focus on preparing\r\nthe birds to fulfill their high genetic potential\r\nof a really high egg mass output in\r\nthe laying cycle. <\/blockquote>\r\n\r\n
    This egg mass production\r\nhas increased in the past years through a\r\nhigher peak, a prolonged productive life and a more challenging environment for\r\nthe birds, especially in the cage-free world.\r\nFor this reason, the birds need to be better\r\nprepared for the challenging laying cycle\r\nby a better body weight.

    As the reproductive\r\norgans already start developing at 15\r\nweeks of age, feed restriction after this age\r\nhas a clearly negative impact on the performance\r\npotential of the hen. Any feed\r\nrestriction, especially after 15 weeks of age,\r\nshould be avoided.
    If flocks are overweight\r\nbefore 15 weeks of age, common practice\r\nis still often to bring them back to \u201ctarget\u201d\r\nweight or try to limit any further increase\r\nin overweight by restrictions in feeding\r\ntime or feeding space, for example. To\r\navoid this, and to stimulate better growth\r\nat the end of rearing, it was decided to increase\r\nthe body weight standards.

    \r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
    This increased body weight standard\r\nhas already been implemented for the\r\nLSL LITE management programme. It\r\nwill be published\r\nand implemented for\r\nall other breeds in the management\r\nguides in early 2019.<\/blockquote>\r\n\r\n

    \r\n\r\nIt must be explicitly understood that\r\nthis increase does not reflect a genetic\r\nchange in the birds: it is solely a change\r\nand update in the management recommendations.\r\n
    The basis for this update was\r\na review of body weight results from field\r\ndata, showing a clear performance advantage,\r\nlower mortality and better feather\r\ncover in flocks with a reasonable \u201coverweight\u201d\r\nof 50 \u2013 100 g above the old body\r\nweight recommendations.

    \r\n\r\nPlease note that, together with this\r\nupdate of the body weight standards, we\r\nwill also change the recommendations for\r\nthe lighting programme.
    The old version\r\nwith a light stimulation at 19 weeks of age\r\nis outdated and stimulation is too late. To\r\nachieve a good start of lay, it is no problem\r\nfor a well-developed pullet to be stimulated\r\nat 17 weeks of age with a body weight\r\nof approx. 1250 g.

    \r\n\r\nConclusions<\/strong>

    \r\nHigh investments in the breeding programme\r\nhave been made to maintain the\r\nleading position of LTZ in the global layer\r\ngenetic market. New breeding farms and\r\nfurther development of the genomic evaluation\r\nare the foundation of future development.\r\nInvestments in additional cage\r\nand floor testing capacity have been made\r\nto increase the accuracy and relevancy of\r\nthe testing results for an actual improvement\r\nof the birds\u2019 performance profile.
    \r\nThere is a complete focus on efficient egg\r\nproduction and robust birds, able to adapt\r\nto the wide range of different environments\r\nin the egg production world.
