{"id":53011,"date":"2020-07-24T14:10:10","date_gmt":"2020-07-24T12:10:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lohmann-breeders.com\/veterinary-laboratory-the-beginning\/"},"modified":"2020-07-24T14:10:10","modified_gmt":"2020-07-24T12:10:10","slug":"veterinary-laboratory-the-beginning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lohmann-breeders.com\/zh-hans\/veterinary-laboratory-the-beginning\/","title":{"rendered":"VETERINARY LABORATORY \u2013 THE BEGINNING"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote>In 1959 the company LOHMANN &#038; Co\r\nKG in Cuxhaven had established a poultry\r\nlaboratory including a post mortem\r\nroom and was looking for veterinarians\r\nfor the care of poultry farms. \r\nMr. Lohmann\r\nhad already gained large experience in the\r\nfeed sector and had employed nutritionists\r\nfor the various food producing species.\r\nThe laboratory was located in the old\r\nindustrial area of Cuxhaven in Northern\r\nGermany. So I entered the company.<\/blockquote>\r\n<br><br>\r\n\r\n<strong>Heinz Lohmann \u2013 a pioneer of the\r\nGerman poultry industry<\/strong><br><br>\r\n\r\nHeinz Lohmann recognized in the late\r\n50s that American chicken breeds yielded\r\nmore meat and laid double the\r\nnumber of eggs in comparison with the\r\nEuropean races. When the chickens were\r\nimported to Germany they showed the\r\nsame performance in Europe. Mr. Lohmann\r\nmade license agreements with\r\nHeisdorf Nelson for layers and Nichols\r\nfor the meet type chickens. That was the\r\nbreakthrough and Heinz Lohmann was\r\nhenceforth regarded as a pioneer of the\r\nGerman poultry industry.<br><br>\r\n\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lohmann-breeders.com\/media\/2020\/07\/VETERINARY-LABORATORY-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"80%\" class=\"imgcenter\" \/>\r\n<br><br>\r\n\r\n\r\n<strong>Cuxhaven full of veterinarians<\/strong><br><br>\r\n\r\nIn 1962 I became director of the LOHMANN\r\nVeterinary Laboratory. My team\r\nconsisted of Dr. Helga Landgraf and another\r\ntwo veterinarians. Heinz Lohmann followed\r\nthe general desire that in Cuxhaven\r\nveterinarians should be trained. This happened\r\nin the years 1963-64. In addition\r\naccording to his principle &#8220;come and see&#8221;\r\nhe invited many guests.<br><br>\r\n\r\n<strong>No chickens &#8211; no plagues?<\/strong><br><br>\r\n\r\nAlready in the early 1960ies we experienced\r\nthe first epidemic poultry diseases i.e. avian\r\nencephalomyelitis and severe outbreaks of\r\nNewcastle disease. Heinz Lohmann ordered\r\nthat all farmers were to be fully compensated\r\nfor their AE-losses. This measure\r\ncreated tremendous trust in the company\r\nLOHMANN. The Newcastle disease however\r\nnearly brought him to close his chicken\r\nbusiness. \u201cNo chickens, no plagues\u201d.<br><br>\r\n\r\n<strong>Importance of immunoprophylaxis<\/strong><br><br>\r\n\r\nFortunately Dr. Hitchner had discovered a\r\nvaccine virus (Hitchner B1) for mass application\r\nagainst Newcastle Disease and the\r\nproblem came to a standstill. This event\r\nhad convinced Heinz Lohmann and us of\r\nthe importance of immunoprophylaxis\r\nin particular the use of live vaccines in\r\nchickens. In the course of the following\r\nyears intensifying the farming of chickens\r\nincreased the infectious pressure in flocks.\r\nTo be named are Marek\u2019s Disease, Infectious\r\nBronchitis, Infectious Laryngotracheitis,\r\nReovirus, Chicken Anemia Virus, Infectious\r\nBursal Disease and Salmonella. All of\r\nthese diseases could be controlled by the\r\ndevelopment of attenuated live vaccines\r\nover a period of ca. 30 years.<br><br>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lohmann-breeders.com\/media\/2020\/07\/VETERINARY-LABORATORY-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"80%\" class=\"imgcenter\" \/>\r\n<br><br>\r\n\r\n\r\n<strong>Marek&#8217;s Disease vaccine<\/strong><br><br>\r\n\r\nOne of the most important vaccines introduced\r\nby LOHMANN in the early 70ies was\r\nthe Marek\u2019s Disease vaccine based on HVT\r\nas discovered by Dr. R. Witter (East Lansing).\r\nFor months LOHMANN was the only\r\ncompany in Central Europe, which offered\r\nthis vaccine. The sales of the HVT vaccine\r\nenabled the company to build a modern\r\nveterinary laboratory.<br><br>\r\n\r\n<strong>Modern Veterinary Laboratory<\/strong><br><br>\r\n\r\nIn 1966 new chicken houses with FAPP\r\n(filtered air positive pressure) were built for\r\nthe maintenance of large SPF-stock. The\r\nname of this particular animal husbandry\r\nbecame &#8220;VALO&#8221;, of Vaccine LOHMANN.\r\nIn addition Mycoplasma infections that\r\ncaused great losses especially in broilers\r\nwere eliminated by egg-injection techniques\r\nusing various antibiotics (1969).\r\nIn the early 70ies Heinz Lohmann\r\nstarted to develop dementia and the\r\nbusiness was then taken over by his sons.\r\nHe died in 1975.<br><br>\r\n\r\n<em>Dr. Egon Vielitz<\/em>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"In 1959 the company LOHMANN &#038; Co KG in Cuxhaven ha [&hellip;]","protected":false},"author":15,"featured_media":53012,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"ngg_post_thumbnail":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[2335],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-53011","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-poultry-news-zh-hans","issue-2-2019-zh-hans","yeararchive-2019-zh-hans","authors-egon-vielitz-zh-hans"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<title>VETERINARY LABORATORY \u2013 THE BEGINNING -
