Pioneering spirit and decisiveneess, tradition and progress: the dynamic path from “Deutsche Fischmehl GmbH” to LOHMANN TIERZUCHT GmbH, the global market leader for layer parent stock.<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nThe Beginning<\/strong>

\r\n\r\nWhich came first \u2013 the chicken or the egg? LOHMANN has always\r\nand will always focus on both: the chicken and the egg.\r\nThe success story of layer breeding in Cuxhaven began in 1959\r\non the basis of a licensing agreement with Heisdorf & Nelson\r\n(H&N) USA and the setting up of the LOHMANN TIERZUCHT\r\nveterinary laboratory.

\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
The contact with the US on the broiler sector caused LOHMANN\r\nto seek similar co-operation in the layer sector. In Europe\r\nthe average production per hen at that time was about\r\n130 to 150 eggs per year while American hybrids were laying\r\n240 eggs per year.<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\n\r\nIn 1959 a contract was signed with Heisdorf & Nelosn Farms,\r\nUSA, a leading layer breeding company. LOHMANN acquired\r\nthe exclusive distribution right of the \u201dNick Chick\u201d in most\r\nof Europe, North Africa, the Near East and the Middle East.\r\nAn important part of the contract was co-operation in the\r\nbasic breeding program.
The first step in was to build up a\r\nfranchise organization, i. e. parent stock operations and hatcheries,\r\neither fully owned by customers or as joint ventures\r\nwith LOHMANN. The various regions were supplied with layer\r\nchicks and pullets by these franchise hatcheries. In contrast\r\nto broiler production, the layer type pullets were usually delivered\r\nto egg producers who had kept layers for years .
Eggs\r\nwere sold through the channels of the established egg trade.\r\nDue to the outstanding service provided for the franchise\r\noperations and the excellent quality of the HNL Nick Chick\r\nproduced by them, within a few years LOHMANN became the\r\nleader in the layer market in the Federal Republic of Germany\r\nand in numerous other countries.

\r\n\r\n\r\nThings really start to happen<\/strong>

\r\n\r\nNot quite 10 years later, in 1968, the\r\ncompany began to develop specific pathogen\r\nfree flocks for the production of\r\nVakzine Lohmann SPF eggs (VALO \uf0e8\r\nsubsequently VALO BioMedia GmbH).

\r\n\r\nIn 1970 things really started to happen. There was the spin-off of LOHMANN\r\nTIERZUCHT GmbH, including the veterinary laboratory and VALO SPF, in\r\nthe course of the conversion of LOHMANN & Co KG into LOHMANN & Co\r\nAktiengesellschaft. In the field of breeding, there is a great collaboration of\r\nscientists and technicians between the genetic departments in Cuxhaven\r\nand the USA. This large-scale breeding work can expect an above-average\r\nprogress of the breeding products.

\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nLSL Efficiency Formula for Egg\r\nproduction<\/strong>

\r\n\r\nIt soon became evident that the requirements\r\nfor individual traits of the hybrid\r\nand the egg were not the same in\r\nEurope and the USA. Therefore, it was\r\nnecessary to develop a layer specifically\r\nadapted to \u201cour\u201d markets. After only\r\na few years of intensive genetic work,\r\nLOHMANN came out with our successful\r\nlayer, the LSL hen (LOHMANN Selected\r\nLeghorn).

\r\n\r\n1977 began with the expiry of the licensing\r\nagreement for the world-wide sales and the\r\nhuge success of the LSL laying hens.

\r\n\r\n\r\nLOHMANN BROWN \u2013 guarantee of success<\/strong>

\r\n\r\nIn 1984 there followed a further major guarantee of success: LOHMANN\r\nBROWN began to dominate the market. So for markets with a preference\r\nfor brown-shelled eggs, LOHMANN also offers the tailored bird. Thus, LOHMANN\r\nalso offers the right hen for markets in demanding brown eggs, thereby\r\nsecuring a high market share in this rapidly growing segment. After\r\nonly a short time LOHMANN distributors and their customers appreciate\r\nthat they can purchase very productive and efficient white and brown layers\r\nfrom the very same source and therefore are able to react quickly to\r\nchanging demands on the egg market.

\r\n\r\nThree years later, in 1987,\r\nPaul Wesjohann & Co GmbH\r\npurchased LOHMANN & Co AG,\r\ninclusive of the subsidiary company,\r\nLOHMANN TIERZUCHT\r\nGmbH, which then in 1999 became\r\npart of the globally-operating\r\nEW Group GmbH.

\r\n\r\n\r\nIn 2008 the new\r\nvaccine factory was\r\nfounded.<\/strong>\r\n\r\nHowever, in 2010 the\r\nvaccine business was outsourced\r\nto the independent\r\nassociate company,\r\nvaxxinova GmbH, closely\r\nfollowed in 2011 by the\r\noutsourcing of the VALO\/\r\nSPF business sector to the\r\nsubsidiary company, VALO\r\nBioMedia GmbH.

\r\n\r\n\r\nThese are merely the significant key dates\r\nin this success story. This is based on the\r\nknowledge that the egg is, and will always\r\nbe, an economical source of animal protein\r\nand an attractive and versatile product.\r\nAnybody who wants to produce eggs\r\nneeds laying hens \u2013 and of course only\r\nhealthy and efficient ones. Therefore,\r\nLOHMANN began very early to concentrate\r\non these characteristics in their selection\r\nprograms. Consumers, however,\r\nwanted more to choose from: Some people\r\npreferred white eggs, others brown eggs, some wanted large\r\neggs, others smaller eggs.

\r\n\r\nEven egg producers had different demands: some kept layers\r\nin cages, others in aviaries or free-range systems. To meet these\r\ndemands, LOHMANN quickly developed the principle \u201eThe\r\nright hen for every managmeent \u2013 the right egg for every market\u201c.\r\nThe initial product range of two hybrids, LOHMANN LSL and LOHMANN BROWN, was extended to three products\r\nin white or brown shell colour: CLASSIC for \u201caverage egg\r\nsize, LITE for smaller egg size and EXTRA for extra high\r\negg weight. The hybrids LOHMANN TRADITION, LOHMANN\r\nSILVER and LOHMANN SANDY complete the range.

\r\n\r\n\r\nLittle steps become milestones<\/strong>

    Anyone who has been successful in one field of activity for decades, must have made progress. Often, any little steps become\r\nmilestones \u2013 a sample:\r\n
  • Marek Vaccination: Nearly 50 percent of pullets, especially\r\nin Sothern Europe, became victims of Marek\u2019s\r\ndisease until LOHMANN developed a vaccine against this\r\nvirus.<\/li>\r\n
  • Feather-sexing LSL: Sexing of chicks used to be difficult.\r\nLOHMANN inserted a gene in one parent line which\r\ncauses the wing feathers of male chicks to grow slower\r\nthan in females.<\/li>\r\n
  • Fishy odour eliminated: Fishy odour in eggs is due to a\r\ngene defect in brown egg layers. Five to ten percent of\r\nhens show this gene defect. LOHMANN scientists developed\r\na testing procedure and eliminated the problem by\r\nrigorous selection.<\/li>\r\n
  • Testing under non-cage conditions: To be able to collect\r\nindividual records from hens in free range or floor\r\nhousing, LOHMANN supported the development of two\r\ninnovative solutions: The Weihenstephan Funnel Nest\r\nBox and the Electronic Pop Hole.<\/li>\r\n
