Hatchery contamination remains one of the biggest challenges in incubation, affecting the entire production chain.
In his latest Toolbox article, Thomas Calil, summarises the essential principles every hatchery should follow:
🔹 Physical protection
Avoid cross-contamination by controlling airflow, using barriers, and ensuring trays and baskets dry completely after cleaning.
🔹 Knowing your enemy
Identify which microorganisms are present. Fungi and spores behave very differently from bacteria. MIC testing helps confirm disinfectant effectiveness.
🔹 PTPL: Temperature – Product – Lapse
Strong cleaning power, the right water temperature, correct detergents, and sufficient contact time all determine cleaning success.
🔹 Gas diffusion
Proper dosage, air movement, and distribution are crucial for safe and effective disinfection.
