📽️Teggnical Insights: Calcium in Pre-Lay Diets

Infolounge logo

Did you know that the level of calcium in the pre-lay diet can affect egg production and egg quality later on?

Researchers compared feeding Lohmann Brown layer from 16–19 weeks with either 2.4% or 3.7% Ca, followed by a common 3.7% Ca diet until 38 weeks.

🐔Key findings from the study:

1️⃣ A lower calcium pre-lay diet (2.4%) may increase egg weight – but this effect could be linked to more pause days.

2️⃣ Using a single diet from 16–38 weeks simplifies feed management without compromising production or egg quality.

3️⃣ Egg production, egg quality traits, and body weight were not negatively impacted by the simplified feeding strategy.

🎙️ In this week’s Teggnical Insights, Juan Valle Diez, our Global Technical Manager Nutrition, shares his expertise on calcium management in pre-lay diets and its impact on performance and egg quality.

This research was presented at the 24th European Symposium on Poultry Nutrition (ESPN), held 23–26 June 2025 in Maastricht, The Netherlands.

🎙️ The research shows that careful calcium management in the pre-lay period can influence early performance — but flock productivity and egg quality can be maintained with a practical, simplified feeding program.
