Teggnical Insights: Poultry Mites – A Growing Challenge

Infolounge logo

Among all poultry ectoparasites, mites are considered the most harmful – especially the poultry red mite (Dermanyssus gallinae).

These nocturnal parasites hide during the day and feed on birds’ blood at night, making them difficult to detect and control.

💡Did you know?

Under ideal conditions, red mites complete their life cycle in just 7-10 days.

They can survive in empty poultry houses and quickly re-infest new flocks.

Losses in Europe are estimated approximately at €1.00 per hen per year, depending on infestation level.

The economic and welfare impact is huge — yet often underestimated by farmers.

🧪 Treatment is often too late and prevention is the key!

Strengthen biosecurity and hygiene practices.

Use monitoring tools like adhesive mite traps to detect infestations early and apply treatments before population grows.
