Measuring Crop Fill | Alternative Housing

Crop checking is a simple practice that should be used throughout the life of the flock as an indicator on the effectiveness of your feeding regime. The most accurate way is to select the birds randomly, and palpate the crop. If it’s too hard, there’s water shortage, if it’s too soft it’s empty or filled with water only. The ideal texture is similar to wet sand!
